Hi friends! It has been sooooo long since I posted anything original here - it’s been a while since I posted much at all tbh. But I’m back, with a blog rebrand (moleskinestudies ---> studyleaf), and with a post!
This post is about a scary word - burnout. Burnout is when overworking yourself builds up, leading to mental exhaustion. This is something most of you would be familiar with to some extent. Burnout can harm your ability to study, and can also affect your mental health. Here, I list some tips for avoiding reaching burnout, and ways to deal with it when you can’t avoid it.
Part 1: Avoiding Burnout
Try to schedule at least one day a week schoolwork-free. Having a full day to recharge can be much more effective than spreading breaks out across the week, because it gives your brain an extended period in which it can properly step away from work. I keep Sundays homework free except in the few weeks leading up to exams.
Don’t sweat the small stuff. If you’re constantly stressing about knowing every last detail of what you’re learning, this can easily lead to burnout. If the amount of content seems overwhelming, you can start by making sure you’re really familiar with the larger, basic concepts that underpin the subject. The nitty-gritty can come later when you’re up to it, or you may find you naturally remember details and examples once you have a framework of basic concepts to connect them to.
It’s okay to say no to social activities. If you’re like me, attending too many social events is exhausting. Coupled with schoolwork, being busy with events can lead to burnout very, very quickly. If you can feel yourself tiring, don’t be afraid to tell your friends you need some time to yourself.
Part 2: Dealing With Burnout
Make compromises when trying to study while burnt out. Trying to study as hard as you usually do will only worsen things, but it’s better to study in a less effective way than usual than not at all. Whether this involves watching YouTube videos on your subjects, or reading the textbook but not taking notes, find something that works for you.
Keep study sessions short and sweet. When burnt it’s easy to loose concentration when studying for long periods, so go for short (even as short as 5 or 10 minutes) sessions. Remember that something is better than nothing.
Avoid brain fog with active study breaks. Physical movement can be great for relieving the ‘fuzziness’ that burnout can bring on, and study breaks are a great time to refresh your brain in this way. I like to use this fun ‘brain breaks’ game.
Ask your teachers if there are any homework assignments you can skip. Less homework can take the pressure off and let you use your limited energy to actually study content. If you let your teachers know that you’re struggling, many will be understanding and try to reduce your workload.

I finished the chemistry past paper i started last night, and a physics past paper. This evening I will look over my notes, and get an early night for my physics exam tomorrow. Hopefully it goes well

I didn’t do much today, but I did make spreads for the rest of January in my bullet journal, and I quite like how they turned out. Especially the one for this week.

Physics exam today. It’s early morning before class starts. My desk is so cluttered.
I study best when eating. Right now, I have yoghurt and whole wheat crackers.
