Six TNB sub-stations destroyed by floods in Kelantan
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 9,2015:
The fast flowing waters of Sungai Kelantan destroyed several sub-stations belonging to national electricity provider Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).
This is hindering efforts to restore power in Kampong Raba and reconnect overhead cables that link Kuala Klai to Dabong, said TNB in a statement yesterday.
“More than 96% of consumers affected by the floods in Kelantan have regained their power supply by yesterday,” said the statement, adding that Kuala Krai and Gua Musang have yet to fully recover.
TNB senior general manager Abdul Aziz Abdul Majid said that out of 1,960 substations in Kelantan which had to be shut down, only 62 have yet to resume operations — 10 of which are in Gua Musang and one in Jeli.
Howevever, six sub-stations were destroyed by flood waters and repairing them will take time, according to Aziz who is also the TNB flood management coordination chairman.
In Pahang, more than 94% of consumers had regained power and in the areas of Kuantan, Kuala Lipis and most recently Jengka, power supply had been completely restored.
Out of the 585 sub-stations which were shut down there, only 33 are still not operational.
In Perak, the number of consumers who have had their power restored has increased to 92% and out of the 88 sub-stations which were shut down, only seven have yet to be restored.
Aziz stressed that consumers should have their appliances and wiring checked before use.
“TNB advises flood victims, who are returning to their premises, to ensure electrical wiring and all electrical appliances are safe to use.
“It is likely that submerged electrical wiring and electrical appliances would have been compromised and need to be cleaned and inspected to avoid any untoward incidents,” said Aziz.
He advised them to have electricians registered with the Energy Commission check their wiring to ensure it was safe for use.
