Hello! i dont know if youre still active on this tumblr but first of all i wanted to thank you for this blog and your website! I recently got interested in JTTW and decided that it would be a great base story for a comic - though of course i dont have any confidence in ever actually sucsess in making it but at least this story inspired me to draw again at some way. And if i ever actually do it your pages are great help especially since translate i read seems to be very incorrect - for example i was searching four chaos monkeys and i had NO idea Wukongs generals are named what kind of monkeys they are. In russian its just "monkeys" all the time, never gives specific names. So big thank you for those huge libraries of research. I always wanted to ask something - do you know if theres an actuall Buddhas deciple Golden Cicada? or who he can be based of? Or hes just made for this book? i always was wondering what exactly he did to be punished into human relm for many rebirths (10?) and what life he had before JTTW Also do you have any hints what kind of "true knowledge" is taught to Wukong so he becomes immortal? I understand its some Buddhist thing but what exactly?

Even though the old teacher told Wukong he never wanted to see him again, I think it’s implied that it was to protect both his and Wukong’s interests. And that he’s a tsundere.

I see him as Wukong’s first adoptive father, so my version of him is protective. He would probably have already known about Wukong’s future and thus knew that JianKong was fated to happen :D

However, he still wants to test Erlang Shen. Just to make sure. Like:

Puti: You’re dating my disciple.

Erlang: (gulps) Yes sir.

Puti: Credentials?

I just found out Sun Wukong translates to Baby Boy (sun) wake to void (wukong). Meaning anyone calling him Sun is calling him baby boy.

But you just *know* Subodhi takes one look at this happy little monkey asking him to be his teacher and immediately thinks "baby boy, baby"

Immortal taoist masters can't kill? In fsyy there is a rule mentioned that they cannot kill (which they later break), but I was wondering if this in jttw is also a rule for them and if the rule is still obeyed.

I can’t say for certain if the rules apply in Xiyouji as I never see it really enforced. There certainly haven’t been any Immortal Taoist Masters that have killed at least but they certainly threatened and nearly committed acts that would definitely kill a normal human. The only Immortals I see that have killed or possibly killed are Bogus Immortals.

So the first True immortal we see is Master Puti who in Xiyouji presented as a Taoist master, and he swore that he would kill Wukong himself a very painful death, if he ever breathed a word of their master and apprentice relationship.

Immortal Zhenyuan in the Ginseng Fruit Arc tries to whip them as well which only tickled Wukong would have absolutely killed Sanzang. He also tried to boil the pilgrims alive, which eve Wukong was worried might have divine magic and killed him as well and certainly would have killed Sanzang.

Those are the only immortals I can think of that threaten outright to the point of killing but I can't say that if they planned to just hurt them to the point past death and still keep them alive. But in either case, they have no qualms with carrying out those threats.

Other Taoist immortals are considered bogus in that they are not recognized by heaven, and this could be because most of them are also demons. This could be a difference in whether or not they just threaten or outright kill as these Bogus Immortals have planned to kill or have killed in the past.

Black Wind Demon hasn't killed but Immortal Ruyi did try to take on Wukong to avenge his nephew. Hard to say if he was trying to kill Wukong or just annoy him but the malice was there. Hundred-Eyed Demon Lord DEFINITELY tried to kill the pilgrims with poison and was going to eat Sanzang so no reservations there. And the Great King of the Southern Mountain also has killed before and planned to kill Sanzang.

So it just might be a difference between the two novels but Taoist immortals at least in Xiyouji have been shown to be quite violent in some cases. Bogus Immortals are the only ones with confirmed kills and True Immortals only threaten to kill.

Wait, Sun Wukong is a Buddhist monk, Jade Emperor is from Taoist myth then which myth Patriarch Subodhi came from?? Is he from Taoist myth?

Subodhi is based on Subhuti, one of the ten main disciples of the Buddha. Despite Subodhi's image as a Taoist immortal in popular culture, JTTW actually suggests that he is a Buddhist deity. See section 2.3 of my previous article.
