The story follows Sergeant Kosugi, who is punished for striking a superior officer and reassigned to a remote outpost in China during the collapsing final phase of the war. There he serves under Captain Sakuma, a brutal and authoritarian commander.
Kosugi is placed in charge of transforming a former military band—a group of inexperienced, untrained young soldiers—into a functioning combat unit.
The film follows his struggle to prepare these unlikely recruits for a mission to retake and defend a fort occupied by Chinese forces. IMDb 7'5
The narrative mixes bleak wartime realism with Okamoto’s characteristic irony, focusing on the absurdity of war and the humanity of men trapped within it.
