Backstory Summary
Born into a unique religious sect, Clare was raised as a paranormal hunter. She and her siblings were trained in various forms of combat, and were taught paranormal lore, paranormal history, and both Catholic and Protestant values. Clare was homeschooled until high school, but graduated from a normal high school with average grades and above average sports prowess. As a test of her abilities, she summoned Henri to be her companion and familiar early into high school. After her twenty-first birthday, church officials approached her and told her that she was to be sent as an ambassador to live with a very powerful family of vampires, and that she would likely marry one of them, if she survived. This was the plan for Clare all along, and she accepted her fate with grace. So she was given to the Sakamakis, as a way for the church officials to make peace, and for them to have an agent on the inside.
The Sakamakis were told that she was a gift from the church and was not to be killed. Going into her situation knowing what she knew, it wasn’t so hard to adapt to. On her first night, she managed to avoid the triplets (sans Kanato) and run into Subaru, whom she sat with and read to. Subaru ignored her at first, but began to take an interest in her, which Clare noticed. Clare quickly became attached to Subaru, relating to the fear of abandonment she sensed in him.
As she has graduated high school, she made a deal with Reiji that she wouldn’t have to go to night school if she continued her paranormal research as well as assisted him with his own research and the upkeep of his lab.
Analysis
As she was trained from infancy, Clare is very strong and capable. She learned to rely on herself, utilizing her quick wits to get her out of situations that her muscles couldn’t. She has very strong mental and physical endurance, and this coupled with her strong will, makes her very had to stop. Having two younger siblings brought out her motherly and nurturing instincts, and these and her church teachings spur her to help others. She has a very cheerful attitude and tries to do whatever she can to make people smile. However, being surrounded by her family and the church and then leaving them suddenly caused her to develop severe abandonment issues and depression. She views these feelings as burdensome, and does not speak of them to anyone, burying them under her cheerfulness and a kind smile. But being twenty-one, she often tries to alleviate these feelings with alcohol (Where does she get this booze? No one knows) and sparring and work-outs to keep herself in shape.
Moving into a house full of powerful paranormal beings brought Clare face-to-face with her own mortality. While she has the strength and skill to kill the occasional paranormal creature, she’s aware that any of the Sakamakis could destroy her with zero effort. After moving in with them, she observed the brothers and then adapted her behavior to pacify each one. Doing so and sticking close to Subaru has kept her alive thus far, and she intends to stay that way. Clare does not have a very strong feeling of self-worth, as she views herself only as a vessel of God through which He helps others. Because of this, she tends to live for others, and not for herself. However, because of her religion, she is not afraid to die and views her fate as trials from heaven.
Relationship with Subaru
Rocky is an understatement. It has taken a lot of work, patience, and blood loss for Clare to make any progress with Subaru. Spending most of her time with him has definitely helped. After the first night of reading together, Subaru allowed her to read to him most nights—if she gave her blood in return. Subaru was never a reader, but he seemed to enjoy (or at least tolerate) Clare’s presence and excited reading, and she always picked books that she thought he would like. Subaru’s frequent breakdowns and bursts of anger were hard to deal with, as anything Clare tried would just make him angrier. Showing any fear was a bad idea, as it just turned his anger into sadism through which he would violently suck Clare, or it would make him feel like a monster and make him angrier. Clare quickly learned to ride out these outbursts in silence, giving Subaru his space until he calmed down enough for her to try to console him.
Knowing that Christa was the main source of Subaru’s pain, Clare plotted to kill her. She managed to infiltrate Christa’s tower and begin a fight with the vampire, but the arrival of Subaru stopped the fight, distracting Clare enough that Christa was able to throw her out of the tower. Thanks to Henri’s magic, Clare survived but broke her back in the fall, causing her to be bedridden for a while. Subaru killed Christa for injuring Clare, but almost killed Clare for her brazen actions. Though she only tried to kill his mother to help Subaru, it severely impacted their relationship. It took a while to mend their relationship to what it was before, but on nights when Subaru was in a particularly decent mood, he would read a bit to Clare when she was still bedridden.
Once their relationship improved and the two were much closer, Subaru began to join Clare in her sparring and workout sessions. While it’s much more helpful for her to practice on someone so strong, Subaru still has to pull his hits and she still ends up with quite a few cuts and bruises after each session. Their post-workout routine usually involves rough relations and a hot bath to finish off.
While Subaru still has outbursts and sucks her pretty hard, he and Clare are much closer now. She has learned how to console and help him, and he opened up more and began to trust her when he realized her feelings for him and that she wasn’t going anywhere.
Relationship with Henri
Henri is a poppet and Clare’s familiar. As Clare previously dabbled in the paranormal and occult, it seemed fitting to her that she have a familiar. He’s different from the vampire familiars, more of a companion and protector than a servant. He’s basically Clare’s Teddy. He can’t speak, but communicates with Clare through a rudimentary form of telepathy (she can understand what he means, but cannot understand coherent thoughts and speech). He also communicates pretty effectively through actions and gestures (lots of tiny clowny bunny tantrums). He’s very close to Clare and very protective of her. He has a very childish personality, as he likes to joke around and play pranks, but he gets very moody when things don’t go his way.
It is unknown how Henri came about, as Clare is very tight-lipped about his origins. What inhabits him is a mystery. Ghosts? Demons? The souls of the damned? A tragically murdered circus clown? We just don’t know.

7. Who watches their partner get tortured and is helpless to do anything about it?
Definitely Subaru. Clare would get in way over her head somewhere somehow, and it would kill Subaru to watch something like that.
9. Who takes the poison so the other person doesn’t have to?
Clare, for sure. Even though he’s a vampire and it would likely be harmless, if it would save Subaru any amount of discomfort, she’d do it in a heartbeat. And he would be absolutely furious about it.
So I’ve had this in the works for a while, even though it’s very short. I’m so sorry for the lack of OC content lately, so please take this and hopefully I’ll do more soon.
Keep in mind that Clare has a very limited scope of Christa, and what she does know of her comes from a very pained Subaru. Clare does not have the sympathy that a knowing audience does.
It had been a long year for Clare Bennet. She had arrived at the Sakamaki mansion and picked Subaru as her keeper. She’d also had to adapt to living with vampires. A really long year. But she would be lying if she said that she hadn’t completely fallen for Subaru Sakamaki. She wanted to help him to heal. She dearly wanted him to be happy. And there was one presence that would not allow this.
Clare sat atop Subaru’s coffin, seemingly oblivious to the chaos that surrounded her. Crashes and exclamations of anger sounded around the room. Occasionally, something would fly by, narrowly but always missing her. Clare’s attention was on the doll in her lap. She was communicating with Henri, patiently waiting for her opportunity to step in and try to calm Subaru. It was Christa, she knew. He always got like this when he came back from visiting his mother.
After a while, the number of crashes slowly diminished and nothing flew past her, so Clare got off the coffin. She placed Henri on her shoulder and moved to where Subaru was standing, his fist still embedded in the wall. She wrapped her arms around him and buried her face in his back.
“Don’t touch me.” he growled.
Clare shook her head no.
“I said get off!” he roared, trying to squirm out of her grip.
She held tight, saying nothing.
“Do you want to die?!”
She shook her head.
He whirled and grabbed her wrist in a painful grip. He was scowling, but his eyes were pained. “Why did you pick a monster like me?!”
Clare looked evenly up at him. She had learned not to show fear, that it only proved in his mind that he was a monster. “You’re not a monster, Subaru.”
She slowly and gently removed her wrist from his grip and twined her fingers with his. In the past, he would pull back. This time he didn’t. He was silent as she led him over to the coffin and pulled him down to sit with her. He was silent as she pulled him into her arms and began to stroke his hair, whispering her love to him. He was silent, but his free hand gripped the side of the coffin so hard, it splintered.
I’m going to kill her. I’m going to kill her or die trying. Subaru will never be happy so long as she lives.

Clare thought going during the daytime would be better, since everyone should be asleep. She made her way to Christa’s tower, quiet should anyone actually be awake. She got to the foot of the tower and stopped to take stock of her equipment. She had her twin push daggers (as always), a silver crucifix (she still thought they were bluffing about all that), and one of the mansion’s swords strapped to her back, just in case.
The tower door was locked, as she expected. She nodded at Henri, and the little doll jumped into the palm of her hand and gestured at the door, which gave a loud click as it unlocked. He scrambled back up onto her shoulder as she pushed open the door, wincing as it creaked. She closed and locked it, and began to mount the winding staircase.
Her process was slow-going, as she didn’t want to alert Christa to her presence. She was sure Christa already knew she was there, but Clare was hoping she’d just mistake her for a servant. Finally, she reached the top of the stairs and slipped into the room.
Christa was standing by the window, facing Clare. She had certainly heard her climb the stairs. She looked at Clare with cold red eyes, so much like her son’s that it broke Clare’s heart.
“Cordelia? What are you doing here this time of day?” She smirked. “Trying to win over my beloved with petty tricks again?”
Clare was taken aback. She thinks I’m the triplets’ mother…She must really be out of it. Karl really did a number on her.
Clare moved into the room, slowly skirting Christa and hugging the walls. “I’m not Cordelia. But I don’t suppose you would know who I am, would you? I doubt Subaru talks about me.”
Christa’s eyes cleared and she faltered for a moment, but her face quickly hardened again. “Oh. You’re that human my filthy son took as his prey.”
Clare’s blood boiled. “That’s it bitch. Your time is up.” She launched herself across the room towards the vampire, murder in her eyes.
Christa grabbed a nearby chair and hurled it at Clare, who dodged and rolled to the side. She recovered and leapt back up, throwing a jab at the woman. Christa easily caught her fist, but Clare sent a swift kick to her chest, forcing her back. Clare bounced back a few feet and cautiously regarded her opponent, looking for a weak spot.
She would never be able to defeat a normal vampire, but she had heard whispers from the servants of Christa’s fragility. Both physically and mentally. Clare was hoping that if she could end it quickly and not get tired out, she might win. However, she had to be extremely careful. She couldn’t match a vampire’s speed and strength, even a weak one.
“This is truly a pathetic attempt on my life.” Christa sniffed. “No wonder my son picked you.”
Clare sprung again, this time swiping the vampire with one of her daggers. “I chose him, you bitch.” She ducked as Christa’s nailed hand made a grab for her.
She grimaced. “Why would you choose to be with something so filthy? He made me filthy.”
Christa managed to catch Clare by the throat, tossing her across the room as if she weighed nothing. Clare hit the floor hard on her shoulder, though she rolled to take the impact. She stood and shook off the discomfort, trying not to appear in pain.
“Subaru is so gentle. He’s kind on the inside. I love him. And I think he loves me, too. It’s not his fault what happened to you.”
Once again, confusion and recognition flashed across Christa’s face, but it was quickly replaced with cold contempt. “You know nothing. And for your insolence, you will die.” She leapt at Clare, fangs bared.
Clare drew her second dagger and jumped forward to meet her, but suddenly Subaru was there, standing in between the two fighting women. Clare skidded to a stop and retreated a step, her eyes wide. Christa also stopped, but looked furious that he was in her way.
“S-Subaru, I—“ Clare was cut off by Christa’s cold voice.
“Get out of my way. She has to die.”
Subaru wouldn’t look at Clare. “I’m taking her away.”
“NO!” Christa shrieked and threw herself at her son, pounding weakly on his chest. “Kill her! She tried to kill me!” Her shrieks turned into thin sobs.
Subaru made to help his mother, but suddenly she was gone. Clare blinked and the vampire was in front of her, inches from her face. A pale hand shot out, lifting her into the air by her throat. Sharp fingernails bit into her skin, and blood began to flow down her neck as Christa carried her to the window. Henri tried in vain to pry the fingers away, but she disregarded him as if he were a fly.
“Su…ba…ru” Clare choked, desperately looking to the vampire for help. But Subaru was frozen, his crimson eyes wide with shock as he watched his mother rip an iron bar from the window and force Clare through the small opening.
Christa dangled Clare outside the window, high above the ground below. Her eyes met Clare’s and she smirked. “This is what happens when you consort with filth.”
Regret flashed through Clare’s mind as she took her last look at the broken woman before her.
“I’m…s-sorry.” She managed to gasp.
Confusion clouded Christa’s face.
“I’m sorry…he d-did this…to you…”
Confusion turned to hurt, and then rage. Christa released her hold on Clare’s neck. As she began to fall, she heard Subaru cry out in the background.
Clare seemed to fall in slow motion. Mostly. She looked over to see Henri desperately trying to use his magic to slow her descent, but they had been very, very high up. She reached out to him, wanting to reassure him.
