Friday and this weekend we will be attending our first convention of 2026. We will be at Setsucon in Altoona, PA! We'll be heading to our hotel tomorrow night! I'm excited but a little nervous since there's still so much snow on the ground! This will be our first time attending this con but from what info I've gathered I think it should be a good one!
Hello guys, just wanted to give you a quick update as to what I'm up to again. This week has been hectic because I started my tutoring job with two groups of kids and I was still finishing up my last week at Panera so I am quite tired.
My last day at Panera was yesterday but I still have one more day of classes to teach today. After that I have to pack because my best bro and I are heading to Arlington for Anime USA. I hate packing last-minute, normally I would partially pack the day before leaving and only leave things I have to use the night before (i.e. toothbrush, medicines) till the last day but due to being busy day of leaving it is.
The convention starts tomorrow and runs through Sunday. It's our biggest convention that we go to so we're pretty excited! I actually have some money this time as well so that's really nice! Anyways, my new classes are on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thusrday schedule so if lesson planning doesn't take me forever on Monday I will try to get back to messages and such...so be patient with me lol.
Only under the read more because it's long, I don't think there's any trigger warning.
Since it was requested here's a small update about the demo recording I did on Wednesday. I was pretty nervous when we first arrived because the guy I was working with has the home studio in his house and well I've never been to someone else's home studio.
Once I walked in though I began to feel more comfortable as this voice coach is very friendly. He lead me to his basement (which normally sounds like the start of a horror story lol) which is basically a super hero man cave. This guy has provided voices for both Marvel and D.C. characters so the basement was decked out in both, with even the restroom having mural on the wall of Spiderman and the Hulk.
Anyway, I thought we were going to be re-recording the demos I made back in 2019 but as it turns out my coach printed out completely new scripts for me to work with. (I'm calling him my coach or voice coach because I usually am iffy with name-dropping for these things for whatever reason. The guy is well known for the most part I think).
It was so nice to work in a professional studio again. It has been years! He was very patient and worked with me on breaking down each script to analyze the best right and gave me great directions so I clearly knew what I had to work on improving but he also let me know what I was doing well. He took about three takes of everything and that's why it took about 3 and a half hours. Unlike the company I worked with five years ago he's not just going to cut my loose once the demos are done.
The package I paid for includes two zoom sessions to help with my home studio and give me a direction for marketing myself. I produced a commercial and a narration demo (which are industry standard when you're starting out) and I'm thinking once i make some more money I may ask him about helping me with a character demo further on down the road. I'm also going to see how much it would cost to get continued mentoring/coaching from him because I really would like to get my voice acting career going.
I feel bad that the previous company basically screwed me out of money by not giving me demos that were competitive enough and then when I struggled with getting anywhere using their marketing suggestions they wouldn't even answer one question of mine for free. I sincerely hope I'm connected with the right person this time and that with his help I can connect to right people that will get me sme work.
So, just wanted to give a quick update on the voice acting front since I've been sharing my struggles on that front on here lately. I am going to be re-recording the demos I made back in December 2019 with a new recording studio, it does turn out that as I feared my demos just weren't great and my sincere hope is that a refreshed recording with a different coach will make them much better.
So, I will be going at 3PM and it's probably going to be a 3-4 hour long session. He is charging much less than the first place which is the only reason I am even able to do this right now but I still can't help but feel a bit nervous about my money running low.
Regardless, I will try to focus on recording and my sincere hope is that this will get me some work going forward. I can give you guys more details later if you'd like to know how things went after the fact.
I wasn't really sure if I wanted to post about this on here but I think my mutuals that have known me for a while would care to know. I don't know if you guys remember me making a post nearly two months ago about my mom falling and being in the hospital but sadly things went downhill pretty quickly and in the span of about 5-6 weeks she ended up going from planning to go home on respiratory rehab to being sent to in-hospital hospice.
Sadly, since her lungs were so damaged my mom passed away yesterday at around 10:45 in the morning. She was really no longer herself in the last few days as she wasn't getting enough oxygen so I feel like I truly said goodbye to her on Monday but it's still been very shocking for my family since before she fell she had some minor health issues but was overall doing well.
My Aunt and Uncle came into town to be with her and support us. My stepsister also came but I have a strained relationship with my stepdad and his daughter. I may vent later about some of the crap we had to listen to from him during this whole ordeal but IDK whether I want to write that somewhere private or vent to mutuals, we'll see...I just wanted to let you guys on here know. Poppy wants me to post on facebook about it to tell IRL people but I feel a bit more community on here, so that's where I started.
I'll probably still be online and it's not like I'm on here much anyway but if you hear radio silence don't worry about me. I'm still going to keep our Youtube channel on its regular schedule as well.
So, I did apply for a job at the Humane society I’m volunteering at, I had an interview last week and it went well. Today I’m having what the director calls a working interview where I will basically be working alongside a current employee at their front desk during their peak hours (12-2) to get a feel for how I do during their busiest times. It’s to help me make sure I feel I’m a good fit and for them to assess if I am a good fit/can handle the multitasking. So, yeah wish me luck with that!
For the most part I was actually shadowing the employee but she did have me fill out some paperwork after explaining it to me and she liked that I picked things up quickly. I also got to see an adoption pick-up and see an adoption interview. Love it when the kitties get their forever homes! I was told to e-mail the shelter director about next steps so that sounds pretty positive I think?
After three years of unemployment I may actually have a job which is pretty crazy. I mean, I’m still kinda telling myself not to jump to conclusions because my brain is so used to setting up protective caution in life but yeah...wanted to let you know about that guys!
V.O related update under the cut in case you’re only here/only care about the humane society job update lol
Unrelated but I did want to update about voice acting things because I don’t think I ever talked about that on here? Basically Poppy made a home studio for me the beginning of this year and I’ve been trying to get it verified by a website that I have a V.O. profile with, so I figured until I get it verified I wouldn’t do auditions, which has been killing my motivation but now that I have a clearer idea of what the noise problem is (cause I did keep getting turned down) I feel a little more motivated again.
Seems like an electrical imbalance issue (the mic is too powerful for my laptop which is causing some buzzing to occur, it’s too low for the human ear but shows up on the recording, that type of thing...) So the guy explained to me what I need to get...here’s the thing though they are in the U.K. so the specific brand he mentioned isn’t available in the UK...so we just need to find a US brand that does the same thing. So, I think we can figure that out. If I indeed have a full-time job it might initially mean less auditioning but I still want to pursue my V.O. Career when I can and you know leave some down time as well...we’ll see what I can manage, it might take some time but yeah...anyway, think I’m done for now.
