In this book Davis locates the afterlife somewhere on the plane of the Milky Way.
we need to talk about Gemma Arterton
“I didn’t mean it like that...”
“We’re good, Woody. It’s all good.”
“Is it?” Woody questioned. “I don’t want any bad blood between us since I’ll be living here now.”
Summer resisted the urge to shove the spoon down her stepfather’s throat and forced a smile instead. “Yes, it’s fine. No harm intended, no harm done.”
“If you say so...”
“Woody, if Summer says it’s fine, she means it. Now eat your comfort soup before it gets cold.”
“How has work been for you, Scot?”
“Terrific!” Scot said, trying to swallow the soup and talk at the same time. “Education numbers are looking great. Private schools still outshine community schools however, even after we implemented the new system in order to get unbiased results.”
“Let’s talk about something else,” Summer stated.
“I’m sorry Summer, I forgot you didn’t go to college-”
“Really, Woody?” both Summer and Scot said out loud. Social tact had never been Woody’s strong suit.
“Dinner is ready, Summer!”
Even after all those years, dinners were still a little awkward for Summer. Her hallucinations had led to a slight paranoia whenever faced with another alien, and it was never going to stop being weird to see her dad with a man who was not her other dad.
“Oh, Woody, have you told Summer that you found your predestined hobby?”
“Yes Scot, I told her last week.”
“Tinkering of all things, huh? Never would’ve expected that from you.”
The small talk bored her, but she nodded politely as they ate.
Woody Weiss had recently moved in with his boyfriend Scot Land. While officially it was due to them bonding over the devastating disappearance of their respective partners (which, to be fair, they also had), it was in no small part also to keep an eye on Summer.
Her condition had improved since starting medication, but every now and then she talked about her biological father’s ghost following her, and Scot was at a loss for what to do.
