Tip #147: How to Get A Good Deal on a Move
Summer moving season is here.
With prices going up (as well as temperatures) it becomes harder to get a good deal on movers, so I've come up with some tips on how to get a good deal on a move!
Study rates! Think of finding a moving company like airlines. The rates vary based on season and what day of the week. Avoid popular moving days like the weekend or at the end of the month.
It's always better to book early to ensure that you get the moving company you want on the day you need. Be flexible with your moving day.
Get multiple estimates. Let the estimator ask you questions. (Beware of low ball estimates and moving company scams especially during moving season! More on scams in Tip #78)
Simply move less stuff. Consolidate and simplify your live and your move by donating or recycling your unwanted belongings.
Check if your movers have any awards, accolades, or reviews online.
Tip# 68: Take Your Time with a Summer Move
Rushing through your move can be more harmful than helpful.
If you live in an area like Los Angeles, you know how hot it can get. Sometimes it quite literally lights a fire under you and makes you want to get things done, so you can return to the shade. Bad idea.
Everyone tends to want to move quicker when moving in the sun. The faster it is done, the faster you’ll be out of the sun, right? Wrong. Trying to keep out of the sun as much as possible is a good idea, but it should never be a reason to rush through your move. Rushing leads to mistakes, and more often than not, the job is done quite sloppily and without care. So take your time. Accidents and injuries are more likely to happen if you rush.
When walking up and down the stairs, watch where you are placing your foot on each step. This can help prevent slips and falls. After lifting and packing, be sure to take breaks drinking some water or eating a snack.
If possible, remove the air conditioners or the fans last during moving day. This way there can be a cool area with plenty of shade from the sun to take breaks in. If this isn’t possible, just make sure there is some shade for your movers to rest in. The sun really does sap your strength.
Those being said, try to complete your move during the cooler parts of the day. During the summer, the hottest parts of the day are generally from 10 AM to around 4 PM. But, it differs depending on where you are.
Have a happy summer move!
