CLIPPED WINGS

Being here is so lonely

So far from home, and wings clipped

and the cords that still bind me to home

stretched thin over so many miles.

Locked out of heaven,

cast out of the garden,

the voices of my gods and guardians

sound thin and faint

as if we speak through tin cans across a vast expanse

the cold endless space between

where I last felt warm and safe

to where I struggle now

to even breathe

like one who remembers life as a fish,

and still can't make sense of the air.

Freckles

My freckles are flecked across me like drips of paint.

No-

Like little stars, in patterned constellations, like my sister stars spread across the canvas of my skin

Letting me know I’m not alone down here, so far from the sky

They’re on my arms to remind me that they give me strength in every circumstance.

On my shoulders to let me know they have my back, no matter what.

On the sides of my face, like little kisses to remind me that I am dearly loved.

Around my neck and down my chest, like a necklace my heart hangs from the bottom of.

Perhaps to help me hang on to that important piece of me, so I don’t lose track.
