but not the version people think they understand.

because there are levels to this.

not all sundown towns look the same. not all of them operate the same.

and some of them?

still exist right now.

most people picture the extreme: burning crosses. kkk robes. “don’t let the sun set on you here” signs.

but that’s just one version.

there are towns with Black residents who don’t even realize what they’re living in.

because they’re “known.” they’re “local.” they’re tolerated.

but a Black outsider passing through?

completely different story.

and before anybody says “that’s old history”

just remember:

the KKK renewed a Secretary of State registration in Georgia in 2020.

not gone.

just… evolved.

#Repost @negus_negusti with @repostapp. ・・・ A sundown town is a town, city, or neighborhood in the United States that is purposely all-white, excluding people of other races. The term originated from signs posted stating that people of color had to leave the town by sundown. In some communities, signs were placed at the town's borders with statements such as 'Nigger, don't let the sun set on your ass here' or 'Nigger if you can read, you better run ..... If you can't read, you better run anyway'. In most cases this was official town policy and extended down to the real estate agents who would refuse to sell or rent to any non-whites. In other cases, the policy was enforced by intimidation, by everyone from residents, local politicians, and even police. Black people were there majority of the victims to be affected by these #WhiteSupremacy laws, but in certain cases, the discrimination was extended to Mexicans and Native Americans. There were tens of thousands of these 'Sundown Towns' in #Amerikkka, so much so that an official 'Negro Motorist Green Book' was published and updated yearly, in order to notify Black motorist traveling abroad to be aware of where and where not to travel. This was handy because road trips for Blacks were filled with inconveniences and dangers because of racial segregation, racial profiling by police, or travelers suddenly disappearing once coming across a sundown town unknowingly.
