Today was one of the most meaningful days in my life.

The day was so meaningful, it’s difficult for me to write about it.

Has that ever happened to you?

Do you ever have a feeling so deep in your heart, any word you try to use to describe it seems shallow?

That is me now.

So let me start as simply as I can.

Albert Einstein once said, “Everything should be made as simple as possible. But not simpler.”

So here it goes.

Thank you.

I know.

It’s one of the simplest things we can say.

And we say it many times during a day.

Or we should.

But when we say it with sincerity, from the heart, it can be as beautiful as a sunflower and as warm as the Mississippi Delta summer sun.

So thank you.

Today I knelt down at the base of a statue of you.

You’re my hero.

I closed my eyes and imagined sitting with you at a simple wooden table in a humble country home, listening to you tell me stories about how nobody could turn you around and how you turned the people and places around you to the beloved community.

Thank you.

Thank you Mayor Neal and the other women leaders of Sidon, Mississippi.

You all are my heroes, too.

You told me, “We’re a little town with a big heart. If you ever need anything, just holler. We’ll be here for you.”

You made us THE BEST pinto beans and cornbread I’ve ever eaten.

The meal you made for us with your own hands and hearts filled my empty stomach and my wandering soul.

Your hospitality brought me home.

Your lives are life to me.

Thank you to the community of Sumner, Mississippi.

I sat in the courtroom where Roy Bryant and J.W. Milan were acquitted by a jury of 12 white men in less than an hour of the charge of the murder of 14 year old Emmett Till, a lynching to which they confessed to Look Magazine several months after the trial.

Thank you to all of the people in that community who sat together face to face and heart to heart to write an apology for that lynching and injustice that happened 67 years.

Thank you Black women who took the lead to begin that process of hard conversations about race and good work of repentance and reconciliation.

Thank you.

You made this one of the most meaningful days of my life.
