SUPERBENT
Superbent is—say it with me—another Kidswap AU. Ohhhhhhhh Joy…this time, the premise is, that the kids are trolls instead of humans! I think I’m getting burnt-out again. The very idea of it being a Kidswap AU sends me into an pessimistic spiral. Why is this concept so prevelant in fandom culture? Why is the idea of taking one character and putting another character’s aethestics and roles so prevelant???????? And why are they always so obsessed with repeating Act 1’s structure? Examine Posters, Examine Mailbox, Examine Computer Messages, etc. Is it some way of “Prolonging the Magic” (by CAKE)???????? To showcase all the minute, little ways that Homestuck’s story COULD’VE gone?
I know why people do it; it’s to play with Touys. And there’s nothing wrong with playing with Touys. When you get right down to it, most fiction can be summarized roughly by saying that it’s the author “playing with Touys.” But why are these AUs so popular? Why are Kidswaps so darn popular, why are Homestuck AUs so popular with the audience of MSPFA???????? Like, why does the audience crave for these things, why do they click the favourite button and go “oh yeah that’s what I want to check out and see what’s occurring in them.”
I’m going hater mode. I realize that. I fundamentally see that as a problem. Going hater mode often blinds you to what is occurring in the story. I’m just. NOT connecting!
It’s not Superbent’s fault. It feels competent. It feels put together. It feels like, if you wanted Kidswap with Trolls chicanery, you would absolutely jump on board, or atleast click favourite to see where it’s going, if you were into that sort of thing. As I believe I have made abundantly clear, I am not, and the more I am expose to this concept the more I feel like I am being burnt out on whatever potential the premise had in the first place. I’m moving on before any more hateful, hater-ish comments come out into these notes. I’m sorry.
