Singularity
First lesson of singularity was interesting... Our assignment for this week and the next is to define what ‘Singularity’ means. We’re to do this through interviews, research, pictures, etc. An interesting point Laurent made was to always have a critical eye in what you’re doing in your life, whether it be watching a movie, walking around town, or sitting at home. Try and connect everything around you to your task. So this is where a little light bulb went off after watching a video on youtube (Procrastinating my VisCom work) made by a group called Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell the video I watched was called how far can we go? Limits of Humanity https://tinyurl.com/gndhcqo The basis of the video was talking about how humanity will never be able to explore the whole universe, even if we were in a hypothetical super sci-fi future. I won’t go into all the reasons into why we can’t (The video will explain far better than I ever could). But this got me thinking about the limits of humanity in other aspects. Which brings me to the next part of my light bulb moment. After simply looking up ‘Singularity’ on the internet I got this definition...
“The technological singularity (also, simply, the singularity) is the hypothesis that the invention of artificial superintelligence will abruptly trigger runaway technological growth, resulting in unfathomable changes to human civilization.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technological_singularity
So humanity develops superintelligence and we transcend to the 10th dimension? Yeah something like that... But seriously that got me thinking. If humanity can only go so far in our universe, is there a point at which Humanity will know everything we CAN know. Will there be a point where we meet that place in human-kind that is just like the void of the universe where we can’t possibly venture?
Relating that back to singularity when the super intelligence ‘runaway’ happens could these AI surpass us and venture forth into the unknown where we could not? If the AI could do it, would that be a feat of human intelligence because we created the AI or are we going to be wiped out like in the Terminator when the super Intelligent AI becomes self aware and begins to purge the entire human race...?
I guess you could but that into the category of unfathomable changes to human civilization...
So many questions, so little answers.
