When Nel next visits her desk at the monastery, she'll find a small card sitting on one corner. Inside is a drawing of a life-and-death event that took place on a glittering, festive night. There's a towering plant, a thick stem topped with a huge, eyeless maw. The plant's mouth is crowded withcrooked teeth and oozing purple drool.
But never fear! A dark-haired somebody is running a majestic lance through the monstrous plant! Her expression cool and composed, her lance drips with onyx and black diamonds (represented by little black flecks and smudges that one might mistake for coal-pen stains. But no. They're gems and precious stones. Totally.)
Behind the warrior, a pink-pigtailed someone else jumps for joy and cheers You're soooooo cooooool!!!
On the other side of the card is a short message:
Welcome back! Thanks again for saving me from that killer plant at the ball. I know you said it was harmless to humans, but still! If it wasn't, I bet you'd have saved me anyway, like so
Hope your mission wasn't too tough!
Nel has received various gifts and letters from several students in the wake of their battle, a mixture of 'get well soon' wishes and simple gestures as a welcome back. It's surprising, really-- considering she's ... never had this amount of attention given to her over the smallest of happenings... but those around her care, and it's a realization that warms her through to the core. Either way, upon seeing another letter left on the surface of her desk, she can do nothing but smile fondly, the fingers of her uninjured hand carefully brushing against the parchment.
The elaborate scene painted upon the card's surface has so many details, she doesn't really know where to begin. Perhaps others would find the art to be rudimentary, no better than scribbles-- but to Nel... she thinks it may be one of the most beautiful things she's seen, a bit of laughter bubbling forth upon seeing the exclamation from the pink-haired companion that seems to be supporting the other. There's nothing that could possibly replace this, an image unlike any other, and one that will be committed to memory for years to come.
"Impressive. I believe you did a wonderful job on the details," Nel muses to herself as her thumb runs over the surface before turning it over, eyes roving through the message left for her. She knew the sender in the moments she saw the pink-haired girl behind what she believes to be herself, but the affirmation is appreciated nonetheless.
The next time Mae visits the classroom, it's likely she will spot a framed image on the wall next to Nel's desk. It's propped up nearly like a painting in a museum would be, proudly displayed, treasured every moment the professor's eyes land on it.
Thank you, Mae. You do not know my nature as a dragon, and perhaps you will never-- but thousands of years of life make it impossible to remember even the things we would love to. This, however... it will stay with me, as will you.
