Since moving to Baltimore, I’ve been very pleased with the quality of local bands that open up for touring acts. They aren’t just tight and fun; they’re often downright innovative. And they also seem to be enjoying themselves and unconcerned with the pretensions of this or that scene, which tended to weigh down the local acts I’d see in Boston and Chicago.

Surf Harp are an indie guitar rock band that sound like a cross between Thomas Dolby, Enon, and the first couple albums by The Mae Shae. The songs are tightly written and the instrumentation is playfully weird. A quick listen to, say, “Rubber Dad” might cause you to pigeonhole them as some variation of “nerd rock,” or else playing on 80’s nostalgia. Those labels do apply, but they downplay the depth of both of the instrumentation and the songwriting. Peel is possessed by an adventurousness that is sorely lacking from most contemporary indie rock, willing to draw upon influences ranging from the aforementioned 90’s psych rock bands, to Mario Kart themes, to Pink Floyd’s Obscured by Clouds, to the marimba-heavy vaguely caribbean rock that was briefly popular in the 80s. And, shockingly, it all works. It never comes across as haphazard or gimmicky.

Peel’s mix is a little muted, but I can’t tell if that’s an issue with the recording or just the effect of listening to it on a Type-1 ferro cassette. I’d recommend grabbing the CD.  Standout Tracks: “HGTV,” “Rubber Dad,” “University,” “Europro,” “Pomegranate”
