ive really fallen in love with surface spell's bourbon house jsk&cape set but i worry about styling it! do you have any ideas on accessories to keep that royal feel to it rather than it becoming too red riding hood-esque? budget isn't really a concern!

I would definitely take advantage of the gold accents and play off those, adding gold jewelry and accessories to add to the royal feel. I would also suggest if you want to avoid a red riding hood look, wear the hood down and go with another hair accessory. Of course a crown of some sort is the most obvious way to go for a royal feel, and there are certainly plenty of different types to choose from, especially if you do an etsy search for “lolita crown.” I think more than a crown though I like the idea of a fancy hat. They show one with the worn photos of the OP version of your dress and I really fell for the look.

A few pieces from FanPlusFriend also came to mind. For a more understated look I love this piece which is a little bit crown, a little bit headdress. OR if you want to go super OTT, I’ve been kind of obsessed with this piece. It would give you a great excuse to go very elaborate with your jewelry and accessories and would DEFINITELY pull it away from little red riding hood.

Hi, about a year (?) ago, you answered a question about a bavarian "dirndl" looking dress. I figured out I actually liked this dress, but despite endless scrolling, I couldn't find the question and I don't know the name of the dress. It's red and had an off shoulder blouse under it, do you remember the name?

The only times I recall talking about dresses that remind me of dirndls it was Innocent World’s Annette JSK. It isn’t pictured with an off-shoulder blouse but it’s the only one I remember talking about. There is another dress that comes to mind though that is of a similar style and is shown with an off-shoulder blouse and that’s Surface Spell Gothic’s Alpine Rose JSK.

Hello. I'm considering buying Surface Spells Musical Instruments jsk in black. I was wondering blouse wise if bodylines l160 in beige or l523 in pink would work better. Also bag wise, would a black and gold book shaped bag work well (I domt particularly want a big expensive bag). Fiy would a white petticoat work even though its a black jsk? Thanks for your help!

The shape of L523 is definitely better suited for that JSK but I’m not sure about doing it in pink unless you’re planning to add more pink to the coord. The instruments might look a little pink in some of the stock photos but they’re actually very brown in real life so unless you’re going to add more pink I would suggest maybe choosing it in beige or black. For your bag I think that could work, a book shape might look nice since the background of the print is writing. And yes, a white petticoat will work fine because it isn’t meant to be seen anyway (and if it happens to peek out every now and then just from general moving around nobody really cares what color it is.) The only time the color of your petticoat really matters is if your skirt/dress is particularly light and thin in which case a dark or bright colored petticoat might show through.

Hiya! What type of blouse do you think would go well with Surface Spell's Day and Night JSK in black and silver? Something with a high collar maybe? I can't really figure out if that would look good, though, so maybe just plain not wearing one would be best?

I think because of the draping on the arms it would probably look best without a blouse.

I really love the Surface Spell Gothic "Lady of Darkness" corset skirt in purple or silver, however I usually prefer classic lolita over gothic. Is there anyway to coordinate this skirt into a classic look or should I just cave in and create a whole new gothic coord?

I think it definitely suits Classic Lolita, especially in silver. I think the best color to coordinate it with is probably black but keep in mind that black doesn’t always equal gothic. The pattern actually has a very classic look and there’s nothing about it that says “this has to be gothic and nothing else.” Just avoid accessories with gothic themes.

I know you’re a fan of renaissance festivals and faires so i hope you can help me. I have surface spell’s the other boelyn girl OP in red and I want to be able to wear it to a faire at the end of the month but also just as a regular lolita dress to get more use out of it and i was hoping you could help me with both. For the fair I have really pretty gold lace floral tights that I’m going to wear with it and gold shoes that remind me of AP’s party glitter shoes but don’t have the pearls or the bow on the front and I want to put a red bow there to match the dress. I kind of want to take the chain decoration off the front of the dress to make it easier to wear with less elaborate outfits but then I think it looks too plain. I also don’t like the way the ruff looks so I don’t want to wear that and I don’t know what to wear on my head. I don’t really have a budget to worry about.

Then I’m at a loss for what to wear it with outside of the faire. I want to get more use out of it but I’m not sure how to get away from the theme because its such a specific look.

I love hearing that you don’t have a budget to worry about because my headwear suggestion can get a little pricey. Absolutely, without a doubt, my suggestion would be to wear a French hood. This one would be perfect for your red and gold look but there are plenty of others around. Then, since you said you feel like taking off the chain decoration would make it look too plain, you could replace it with bodice jewelry that pins on and comes off. I think it’s prettier than what is already on the dress and it gives you more versatility. 

To wear it outside of the Renaissance theme you could always add to it. Perhaps a bolero to change up the look of the neckline or an overskirt so it looks like the dress is a blouse. The dress does have a very specific look so it’s going to be difficult to get away from that but with the right accessories you could get some cute Classic coords out of it. Maybe you could tone it down a bit with some black. I wonder if it would be possible to wear another skirt between the layers, under the open red part but over the gold pattern part so you could get different looks that way. It could be worth playing around with.
