The Surf Chicas
“Want to come on my surf trip this year?” asks Beth.
...
Sure, why not. Sounds like fun, pretty inexpensive, and surfing’s one of those things I’ve always wanted to try. A no-brainer, really.
...
But this trip turned out to be so much more than that. It was an opportunity to push myself physically, mentally, even socially. A lot of my move to New York was about getting outside of where I’m comfortable. And this was that on steroids.
...
So, I knew this was a group trip. Beth had been introduced to this group through her cousin, who’d made a few surfing friends when she was at surf school in Mexico five years ago. Since then, the “Surf Chicas” have grown to 20 women who share a love for this sport, and in discovering surfing have found friendship as well.
...
The Surf Chicas. Strong, charming, funny, open-minded, dynamic women. They looked out for me, cheered for me, and welcomed me into their close-knit circle with open arms. I’ve come to learn that being included in this group is a big deal, inviting a new Chica isn’t something done lightly. It’s a carefully curated mix of like-minded, but at the same time, wholly unique personalities. The age range spans 20 years. They have children and pets and boyfriends or husbands or ex-husbands. They are lawyers and fundraisers and volunteers and businesswomen and pillars in their communities. They live in cities and suburbs. They’re in totally different life stages but share a common drive to continue to challenge themselves. And it works. Beautifully.
Three things surfing taught us (by Truta & Colleen)
1. We are stronger than we think 2. How to relax AND be aggressive 3. Waves don’t give a f*ck
