1952-2018. I haven't been dreading this post; I've been taking my time. ❤ After all, this was both one of the most difficult and yet wonderfully imperfect, #perfect days of not just my life but the lives of everyone who knew the #surflegend, the owner of one of #Coronado's most highly respected contracting companies, the #father to me, the #husband to my mother, the #son and the #brother and most notably, the #friend to all, Donald Neil Manly (aka Harris). He passed away on November 2nd, 2018, of a quick hitting melanoma that metastasized to 4th stage #braincancer in less than 3 months. I wish I could share with everyone how he personally "said" goodbye to me hours before he was gone but a longer note is in order; this is not the proper forum, yet it was this: nothing short of unthinkably heroic. What a man he really was! Donnie had the most beautiful #paddleout to celebrate his life on Saturday, January 26th at 11am with friends and family and admirers from all over the USA coming to give him a proper goodbye. It was so hard to open up and let him go but so glaringly fascinating to see the hoards who came and as I walked up to greet them, mostly strangers, it was as if I'd struck gold. I can't explain the pain but it's not important because for that moment, when I witnessed the intense mass of #love; saw with my own eyes just how many people Don touched, whose lives he made better just by having existed.... powerful beyond words. I couldn't have thought up a more fitting and wonderfully joyous/tearful look back at his legacy. I don't know what else to say except that Donnie wasn't only my father but my best friend for the better part of the last 20 years and that made me lose my mind for a few months but on that day, his day... I understood that life is not about pain or joy but about experiences and the absolutely extraordinary magnitude one human can have. That, in itself, makes me one of the luckiest people on earth; he loved me.
