According to mythological stories Lord Shiva & Mata Sati were married. Daksha (father of Mata Sati) offered a Yagya (auspicious bonfire with prayers and chants) in which he invited Brahma, Vishnu, Indra and other gods and goddesses but deliberately did not call Lord Shiva. At the altar of sacrifice, Sati asked her father Daksha the reason for not inviting Shiva to which Daksha insulted Lord Shiva. Sati, who could not stand this insult and offer her own body to the fire. Lord Shiva infuruiated, lifted the burning body of Sati and started to rotate around the earth in causing destruction all around. To save the entire world, Lord Vishnu, split the body of Mata Sati into small pieces with his Sudarshan Chakra after which Lord Shiva stopped the destruction. Wherever the body part of Mata Sati fell on the earth, is called now an auspicious and powerful temple - the Shaktipeeths. In Surkanda Devi Temple, a portion of the head of Mata Sati was fell, hence it's known as Surkunda or Sirkunda. There are more stories behind Surkunda devi temple, Uttarakhand.
