Philadelphus (Mock Orange)
Little finger lime harvest.
One hopes that this cyclosporidia outbreak is over before lettuce can grow from seed, but there will be more like it, now that the US's CDC is in tatters--thanks, Trump and RFK jr! So! I am once again asking you to give growing things a try! Roll the edges down on a bag of soil, drill some holes in the bottom of a bucket or a plastic tote, clear out that overgrown planter--whatever you've got!--and drop in some seeds.
Lettuce needs a bit of shade during summer, but will still grow if you keep it watered and keep an eye on it to harvest before it bolts (gets leggy and goes to seed). Other leafy greens do better in summer heat, like some varieties of collard, Malabar spinach, and maybe my favorite, purslane. There are so many things to try. Amaranth, turnip greens, Egyptian spinach/molokhia... Just try something!
Squash and melons!
The squash continue to grow what seems like feet per day and are putting on fruit. Since I'm growing landraces I am not sure what they'll look like until they're mature.
The melons are taking a bit longer to get going, but they're going now. One cantelope (or honewdew, I forgot what went where) is attempting to grow straight up in the lilac bush.
