Have a Great Idea for a Campus Sustainability Project? Submit a Green RFP!

Hokies, are you ever out and about and notice a missed opportunity for our university to further green our practices? This is your opportunity to raise your voice! Green Requests for Proposal, or Green RFP's, are proposals written by students from all majors at the University to implement environmentally conscious projects through the utilization of university resources and funds. The program began in 2010 and has since approved 22 student projects including reduced flow shower heads in dorms, bike repair stations around campus, and water bottle refill stations in student centers. The program gives preference for funding to proposals that support the Virginia Tech Climate Action Commitment and Sustainability Plan, that produce realizable savings, and that require one-time rather than ongoing funding.  In order to submit a proposal, the official Green RFP proposal form should be filled out in a thorough, but concise manner. The proposal should clearly state what the problem is (the current state of whatever it is the project is meant to improve), a clear budget, other funding sources, and any potential cost savings. Additionally, students are required to get approval from a university official from the department that will receive the project (for example, if the project is in the Residence Halls, then the student must get approval from an official in the Office of Housing and Residential Life).  Applications should be submitted no later than October 18th at 4PM to Denny Cochrane at [email protected].  For more information, including copies of previously approved proposals, check out our website's section on Green RFP's and feel free to contact Denny Cochrane with any further questions.
