Sutter was a businessman who played an important role in the colonization of California. Slutter enslaved hundreds of native americans as forced laborers and raped indigenous girls as young as 12.

In 1890, all that remained of the once-impressive fort was the original two-story adobe building built between 1841-1843. Reconstruction began in 1891.
