It has been quite some time that I experimented with TTS. During the Windows XP days, this was in the SAPI4 days when MS had released their Speech SDK. It took me two weekends to figure out good options to make a transition to the “speaking computer”.
The first weekend was on vacation to Kerala. My cousin mentioned that the mobile phone form factor is a big strain on the eyes – the flicker and the fast moving images, animation effects. So I thought let me try out some things that would make me “read less” on the mobile. Settled on ezPDF and SVOX. SVOX has got some good voices – I particularly liked the sound of the UK English presenters. Selected one and now I have a good pdf to speech going on my android.
The last weekend I tried enabling a similar setup on the home desktop. Evaluated some of the options and selected TextAloud. The software as such is simple. Comes with a good set of basic features as well as keeping a history of files opened. It has a good range of toolbars for common applications and browsers. Tried out some voices – and settled on a UK English Voice with an Indian Accent.
So, now I have a “personal assistant” that can read out things for me – either at home or on the move. Let me see how much I make use of the same.
