Summary: You were in one of Emma's foster homes before she moved to Maine and you go to find her not knowing what happened to her only to find out that she has been happy and with her 'real' family this whole time.
Warning: some angst but with a happy ending, Swearing
(Y/N) = your name
You walk towards the bus stop with your duffel bag on your shoulder ready to make your way to Storybrooke, Maine. You didn't even know there was a town with that name, in school, it was never mentioned- not that you ever really paid too much attention to that. You had bigger things to worry about while others were worrying about grades.
The past few months have been incredibly hard for you, you're still only 16 which means your still in the system and supposed to be living in some crappy home where they don't feed you and treat you like a maid instead of a kid. The only place you ever actually felt like you could act your age was with Emma, she is like a big sister you've always wanted. That's why it's so important to you that you find her, she's been M.I.A. for months if not a few years and that has never happened. She always came and checked on you when she could and she always somehow contacted you if she wasn't able to. So you assume the worst, that something terrible has happened to her and that's why she hasn't come back for you.
You sit on the bus next to some old man who keeps giving you weird looks and you try to ignore it but it's starting to get out of hand. "Do you mind?" You aren't one to have a sensor, it's one of the things you and Emma had in common and probably one of the reasons you both got hit the most.
He looked shocked at your attitude, "you're pretty young to be on this bus by yourself don't you think. Where is your mother?"
You roll your eyes as you take a deep breath and make sure when you let it out to sound annoyed, "it's really none of your business. Why are you trying to make sure I'm alone so you can be a perv?" you cross your arms and go back to watching the cars pass by going in the direction in which you came not seeing the uncomfortable look on the man's face. At least that got him to get up and go sit somewhere else, now you're able to lean your head against the window with your feet up on the opposite seat where the heat from the man's butt was.
Hours pass and you wake up from a sleep you didn't realize you had fallen into, your first instinct is to panic because you might have missed your stop and then you remember that Storybrooke was the last stop on this specific bus so the lady would have woken you up. By the looks of the bus though you are getting pretty close to your destination and it gives you a nervous excitement in the pit of your stomach.
You get off the bus at 12:54 AM right in front of something that looks like a Diner called Granny's and in that moment you realize you just entered a small ass town. "oh boy," you say to yourself as you walk towards the building to see if maybe just by luck Emma would be in there or if someone knows her. The little bell rings above your head and it makes you freeze because all the eyes just turned to face you, you are not the attention type and if you get too much your defense is to get mean or rude. "What the hell, have none of you people seen a teenage girl before?" You huff and walk right over to the counter where a brunette younger woman was standing wiping off the counter as she looked up at you.
"Can I help you?" She said mostly amused and stopped wiping to talk to you.
"Yeah actually you can, do you know any Emma's around here? Blonde, tall." You look around the diner as you spoke before landing on the brunette again, whose name is Ruby by the name tag on her skimpy outfit.
Ruby squints her eyes in suspicion, "who's asking?"
You made a perplexed face before dropping it to bang it against the table in frustration, you did not want to deal with stupid people. You finally look back up and feel a bit defeated, you're tired and hungry and you just want to find Emma so you know she's okay. "I'm (Y/N), and I just really want to find Emma please. Have you seen her or do you know her?"
Ruby felt a little guilty, you looked tired and like you have had a long day. "Sorry, yeah everyone knows her. She's the sheriff." You furrow your eyebrows and tilt your head at the statement, she's here and she has a job. Well, at least she isn't dead.
"Um, do you know where she is?" You ask and stand up not really sure what you're about to go find.
"She's either at the station with her dad or at her place- here I'll write down her address and then the station is right down the street." Ruby wrote the address on a napkin before being called over by another person, "If you have trouble finding her just come back and I'll call her here."
"Thanks," you say and stare at the napkin before heading out of the door, this was all weird. Emma has a dad now? She is living in an apartment and has an important job, you start to think that maybe it wasn't such a good thing that you came.
It takes you a little bit but eventually you find the station and when you walk inside you hear laughter, it was familiar laughter mixed with strange. There were definitely more than just two people in there but you already made it all the way here you can't just chicken out because it's uncomfortable.
You look around the corner and you see a woman with a pixie but, a man with blonde hair who was holding the other woman's hand, a well-dressed brunette in a pants suit and Emma. She looked so happy, she was laughing and talking with everyone. Whenever you saw Emma she was always way more closed off and her closed off with you was open compared to how she acted with everyone else. It made you upset, she's replaced you and she didn't even care that you were all alone in Boston this whole time.
When you finally get the courage you walk the rest of the way into the station and she looks over at you, you can tell she didn't recognize you in the first second she saw you but then the guilt washed over her face and she looked pale. It made you madder, now she was pitying you, she left the poor little girl all alone in a city while she was having fun with her real family. She stands up and the rest of the room got quiet at Emma's reaction, the rest of them still not even looking over until they follow Emma's line of sight.
"(Y/N)," Emma said in disbelief as she moved around the desk to come slightly closer but you stayed in the same place.
You give her a tight smile, "oh so you do know my name. I was a little worried you wouldn't." Your arms are holding yourself across your chest, this was not how you expected the reunion at all. "So glad you're not dead," you say with an unwanted crack in your voice before turning and walking out of the station at full speed. This was a bad idea, why did I think coming here was even a remotely good idea. People that leave don't usually want to be found. You were far down the sidewalk when Emma finally made her way out of the station after you, she would have been out sooner but Regina was asking a whole bunch of questions and her parents were confused.
"(Y/N) wait!" Emma calls from behind you but you keep walking.
"No thanks, I'll pass," you laugh without humor and continue walking back to where the bus had dropped you off in the first place. "Go back to your family Emma!" You knew it was a low blow but you were hurt and you didn't get to ever have that reunion, your parents died in a murder-suicide. Your dad killed your mom and then himself, leaving you to sit in your crib by yourself crying.
"Come on (Y/N), it's not like that stop it!" She runs to catch up to you and grabs your arm gently to get you to stop moving.
You were jerked to a stop but you don't look up at her, you were mad and hurt that she was happy doing things without you. On the other hand, you've been doing everything alone wondering what happened to her. "What the hell do you want! You leave me there all alone and I think you're fucking dead somewhere so I follow your trail and find out you're HERE!!!" You were furious, "Just leave me alone, I'm going back to Boston you don't have to see me."
Emma frowns, "I know I'm sorry. I have a lot of stuff going on here but I should have come back to tell you what was going on, I am really sorry (Y/N)." She was shifting on her feet, Emma was happy to see you. She may not have thought of you in a long time but you have always been like a little sister to her.
"Whatever," you say glancing at her but only for a moment. "who were those people?"
"Well, the guy and the woman standing next to my desk were my parents and then the woman who was sitting on my desk well, that's a bit more complicated to explain." Emma chuckles and kind of shrugs it off as not a big deal.
"Did you ask them why they left you on the side of the road? Because that was fucked up." You laugh even though you're still a bit mad, "how could they have possibly had an explanation for that."
"That's another hard one to explain.." You let out a breath and start to turn to start walking again, "they didn't leave me there. They sent me through to this world it's just where I ended up."
You give her a disbelieving look and start to say something along the lines of 'bullshit' when she lifts her hands and shows you her magic. "What the-"
"Miss Swan!" Regina shouts approvingly to Emma for showing a stranger magic, "what the hell are you doing?"
Emma turns around and just looks sheepishly to the brunette but you don't like that the woman is being all controlling. "What's it to you?" Emma turns and looks at you impressed by you talking back to Regina
"Excuse me, dear?" Regina walks over with all the power a woman in a pants suit can, "you better watch your tone- who exactly do you think you're talking to."
"I thought it was obvious, I was looking directly at you," you roll your eyes and notice the look Emma was giving you and it made you feel proud.
"Didn't your mother-" Regina started to say but was interrupted and not by you.
"Hey, back off," Emma says looking over at Regina communicating with her eyes for her to stop, she was always protective of you and that didn't change just because you guys have spent time apart.
Regina arches one of her perfect eyebrows to Emma never has she seen the blonde protective of someone like this- well besides Henry. "Fine."
You stood there with a satisfied smirk that Emma was on your side even though she was laughing and buddy buddy with the three when you first saw them.
It was an awkward stare down for a few minutes before Emma got the hint and intervened, "Alright before we stand here until we are dead let's knock it off, both of you. (Y/N) this is Regina, she's a... friend and the mayor of this town. Regina this is (Y/N), she is practically my little sister."
You smirk when Emma hesitates on the friend thing, "So you're dating?" The moment the words are out of your mouth Emma hits your shoulder and for once the put together woman looks a little flustered. "Or not, my bad." You chuckle and put your hands up in surrender.
The three of you talk for a little while, Emma explains the story of how you two met leaving out some of the more gory details but the basics. She then explains the details about the town with the help of the evil queen, you couldn't believe any of it but then again it all makes sense. Emma always wanted to help others while in the homes, she would rather get hurt than have others get hurt and now she does it for a living.
"So you staying, kid?" Emma asks out of nowhere and you look over at her with a shrug.
"I guess so, do you know any good places for me to sleep?" You weren't referring to a bed and breakfast and Emma knew that but Regina didn't, not right away at least.
"You're a bit young to be renting a room at Granny's Inn." She jokes but Emma gives her a head shake explaining that's not what you were referring to, "Oh."
"You're going to stay with me," Emma says with a smile and Emma didn't see it but Regina looked like a puddle of goo when the blonde put her arm around you and started to walk in the direction of Granny's. "But first let's get you some food." You try to tell Emma you aren't hungry but she knows that trick by heart, she knows how you don't like taking handouts or feeling dependent on anyone because people always let you down. She wouldn't have it and that's one of the things you love most about her.
You end up staying in Storybrooke with Emma when your social worker comes here and finds you Emma adopts you so that you don't have to leave. She knows she'll never replace your real mom but she hopes to give you a good life. After a few years, Emma and Regina finally admit their feelings with the help of you and Henry pushing them towards each other, you all move in together and on every Thursday night you have a family movie night and somehow you forget that you ever had a bad life.
