Philip Wittebane/Belos & Tenebrae/Vitiate/Valkorion are kind of the same person
Okay so this is a post that has been sitting in my notes app for like. Almost 3 years now. Finally decided to give it the light of day today Iol.
Belos from The Owl House and Tenebrae from Star Wars: The Old Republic have a lottt of similarities actually. Here is a list of everything I could think of:
- Artificially enhanced lifetime from consuming other life forms' spirits
- Wants to commit genocide
- Lived over 4 centuries
- Built an empire(s) in that time from basically a fractured/not unified community (the Sith post the Hyperspace War being the fractured group and the wild witches who were not organised into one collective empire)
- Is an absent Emperor who doesn't show himself to the public much anymore even though he started off directly controlling his Empire. However, do not take his physical absence for leniency, he still very much controls it from the back
- 3 major looks are the white and golden one meant to invoke the idea of purity (Valkorion and the main Belos look), the blue one which is older and is seen by others the least (Vitiate's body and Belos with his human coat), and the true original look from when they were just another member of their species (red Sith Tenebrae look, Philip's human look)
- Was seemingly a normal person before becoming violent and then becoming Emperor, minus the weird tendencies from when they were a child (Tenebrae not crying at all as a child (source: Revan novel) and kid Philip seemingly being wordless whenever he wore his mask)
- Carved magic symbols into their very skin to grant additional powers (Tenebrae's alchemical markings over his red Sith body and Philip with the glyphs as seen in the Hollow Mind portraits and Elsewhere and Elsewhen)
- Experiments with immortality a lot (through those carvings on their skin)
- Experiments with magic/alchemy a lot. Very knowledgeable on these topics actually, to the point of creating some magic/special abilities themself
- Refuses to die and keeps coming back. It takes several attempts to actually kill the guy
- Red magic/lightning
- Wants to drain magic/spirits of at least an entire planet's worth of people for ultimate goal (specifically through draining them too like. Tenebrae performed that ritual that killed Medrias and then did it again to Ziost through a drain power thing. And Belos literally uses "the draining spell")
- Revered as a godlike being among their subjects as Emperor, spoken of as having supernatural powers and widely feared and respected
- Has a bad god and/or hero complex problem
- Has that one family member that THEY killed but also just can't let die so they keep them around in some capacity (Dramath and Caleb)
Their relationship with this family member is also the most interesting aspect of their character to me because it gives them complexity beyond just being an evil Emperor, y'know?. Said relationship also becomes infinitely more fascinating when compared to how the Emperor in question treats the kid(s) under their care because it ends up saying a lot about their psyche and how they view the people who raised them vs the people they are responsible for. Fucked up family relationships that end in death galore
- Started off life in a tough place (definitely poor & with an abusive step dad and probably poor & orphaned)
- Killed brother/half brother (Dramath the Second if anyone was wondering. Also source: Revan novel)
- Long hair and beard at one point
- The golden emperor version speaks in a buttery smooth voice that is very satisfying to listen to
- Plays the 'innocent old man' card at least once
- Master Manipulators
- Abusive to the children in their care. Held parental love like carrot on a stick so they could use said kids for their bidding
- Has a weird relationship with children in that they keep making them but also treat them horribly. Only makes kids to serve him in the first place (Children of the Emperor for the "keep making them" thing for Vitiate, and both the Children and the Tiralls for the "treats them horribly" bit. For Belos, it's the grimwalkers in case it wasn't clear. Honestly the total number of "kids" they've accumulated is quite a large number if you count ALL the Children of the Emperor and all the Grimwalkers)
- Loves possessing other people's bodies as puppets
- Divided their Empire into segregated domains that each deal with one specialisation (9 Covens and 12 Spheres of Influence). Every person in their Empire fits under one of these, and the leaders of these groups rule the day-to-day
- Has a personal spy/assassin/underling that reports directly to them. This person eventually betrays him due not wanting everyone ever to be drained and dead (the Emperor's Wrath and the Golden Guard, although the relationships themselves are veryyyyy different)
- Lowkey at least one of their outfits is gender nonconforming (I know most Sith wear skirts but still. And Belos sports that pretty long hair and gown himself)
- Their final death has them as a disintegrated version of them at the protags' feet (Echoes of Oblivion and Watching & Dreaming)
- Tried to control the very essence with which they could do magic/alchemy (the Titan & the Force ("There is no death. There is only the Force. And I am its master!" remains one of the hardest lines ever))
- Got showed up by another god like being at one point (Sel-Makor from the Jedi Knight storyline & the Collector)
- Actively fucked over at least one pair of siblings (Arcann and Thexan & Clawthorne sisters. Belos also fucked up himself and Caleb's relationship but yeah)
- Changed their appearance and OG name after becoming Emperor to distance themself from where they came from
- In their final death they sort of go through their forms (Philip going from monster form to human to monster again, Tenebrae being the final boss after fighting Valkorion and Vitiate in Echoes)
- Is evil till the very end, using their last strength to reach out their hand at the good guys as a sort of final attempt (Tenebrae's last movement being to reach out to the Outlander like an attack, and Philip trying to grab at Luz's feet)
- Petrification is a part of it. Tenebrae kind of gets petrified in Echoes and Belos petrifies those in the Confirmatorium/tries to petrify Eda)
- There is a big confrontation with them inside a person's mind (Echoes of Oblivion and Hollow Mind)
Anyways that's it I think. Love them both to pieces <33333 evil old men my beloved. I don't actually think they'd get along at all. Belos would abbhor any "magic" and Tenebrae would see him as maybe just a slightly bigger ant to crush under his feet lol.
Can’t believe Tenebrae delivered the self-burn to Valkorion and roasted himself alive.
Emperor Tenebrae
My take on Emperor Tenebrae.
