We're starting another themed week here on Songs of 2019, and I'm super hyped about this one because it involves a lot of awesome-sauce creations.

Ready?

Okay: it's Studio Ghibli Week! And our first song is--

I'm Gonna Fly performed by Sydney Forest from Kiki's Delivery Service

This is one of the first studio Ghibli movies I can remember seeing--and I loved it so much that it was one of my frequent rents from Blockbuster. I just fell in love with everything about it--it was magical and beautifully animated. The story was captivating and the music was stunning.

Young me never stood a chance.

And on top of that, Kiki was such an inspiration. She went off into the great big world and found her own way. She was brave and determined and kind. And at the end of the movie she saves her new best friend and becomes a town hero.

Also she could fly. I was insanely jealous.

Arguably, one of my favorite moments of the whole movie was the scene that bled into the credits--where Kiki is living her best life with her friends and I'm Gonna Fly was playing in the background. It was such a hype way to end the movie, and it left little me feeling like I could fly--like anything was possible as long as I kept trying and never gave up. It did everything a Studio Ghibli film does, so it only makes sense that the two were paired together.

I'm Gonna Fly is just one of those nice upbeat, wholesome songs about doing your best and continuing on. It matches the mood of the movie and the characterization of everyone we fell in love with over the course of the film. It uses a guitar and a tambourine in a pop-like way to capture our hearts and carry us away; it leaves us with our own little bit of magic and a lasting impression that will forever shape the way you feel about the world.

“I’m Gonna Fly” - Kiki’s Delivery Service - English Dub Ending

No shade to the original Japanese songs but the original English dub songs for Kiki’s Delivery Service are so fucking good and I’m so sad so many people don’t know about them because of the newer English dub that is more faithful to the Japanese version.

In the old English dub Jiji has more lines too! Like really funny throw away lines. I assume they removed them to make it more faithful to the original content.

I discovered this when I finally bought the Kiki’s Delivery Service DVD and it didn’t have the dub version I grew up with and I was like WTF????

I had to go online and look up which version had the English songs because those songs are so important to me! Shout out to Sydney Forest your songs were banging.

You can’t even watch this version on streaming services or anything! But I highly recommend trying to find this version and watch it!
