Launched in Detroit This Summer, A Black-Led Mural Festival Wants to Revitalize Neighborhoods with Public Art

Murals have long been associated with placemaking because of their unparalleled ability to transform underutilized corridors and city stretches into spaces primed for cultural gatherings, tourism, and subsequently, economic growth. This revitalizing potential is what drives a biannual festival that launched in Detroit earlier this summer as it dramatically altered the urban landscape of the city’s central North End neighborhood.

In Only Fooling Myself, at which point will Sydney tell Lucas how she feels about him, and what will she do after high school?

It’s gonna be a while. haha.  At this point, I’m thinking Lucas doesn’t officially find out until the time capsule is opened.  I think he might suspect at times, but she can’t bring herself to tell him.  She’s too scared to tell him how she feels.

After high school, Syd will end up at getting a basketball scholarship to UCONN.  Lucas convinces her to take the scholarship and that they will make it work (they are together by that point)  As far as a job after college, I’m leaning toward something in the medical field…but not completely sure…and she will end up getting the job as Tree Hill’s ladies basketball coach. (By that point Tree Hill will have a girls team)

What a night at the House Of Vans Detroit Pop Up!! We’re talking to fine artist, Sydney James about her evening at the venue–from the inspiration behind her live painting to finding out what her other passions are when she’s not creating amazing art!

Who are you, where you are from and what do you do? I am Sydney G. James a fine artist/muralist from Detroit, MI.

Tell us about the live mural you painted at House of Vans Detroit. What was the concept behind your piece? I painted my mentee and fellow artist, Bakpak. The body of work I’m currently working on is titled “Appropriated Not Appreciated: Reclamation.” The ongoing series addresses the state of black women in this country and beyond. I chose to paint Bakpak because she represents a subculture that is not widely acknowledged yet. 

Is there an aspect about live painting that you enjoy more than painting in the studio? The main aspect that separates live painting from studio painting is that people get to experience the act of creation first hand. Painting is a very intimate and personal act. Painting live is like an open invitation that brings people into my world for a short time.

A lot of your work focuses around portraits and the story that can be told with a face, smile or a look in someone’s eyes. What drew you to capture the human experience through portraiture? For me, faces are landscapes that tell intimate stories. Social issues, personal struggles and triumphant stories can be shared in a beautiful way through something as simple as a face.

Being a Detroit native, what do you love about the city? For folks who have never visited, what’s something they must go see for themselves? I AM DETROIT. I love that Detroit is a personality and culture as much as it is a location on a map. Detroit has made the world move figuratively and literally. People who visit the city should definitely go to the Detroit Institute of Arts, Eastern Market to tour the murals, Motown Museum, Belle Isle, Rock City eatery, and Louisiana Creole. I could go on for days.

When you’re not creating art, where could we find you? Do you have any other passions that fuel your creativity? When I’m not creating art, more than likely I’m traveling. From Australia to Ghana, I have gained so much knowledge, culture and a stronger desire to visit as much of this Earth as possible.
