The Symbol of the Unconquered by Oscar Mischeaux Today, at @metrographnyc, I saw another film by Oscar Mischeaux, Ten Minutes to Live. But it brought this one to mind. Essentially a self loathing light skinned guy sets up a young homesteading couple to be murderer by the KKK. Mischeaux made this film and one other as an answer to D. W. Griffith's Birth of a Nation. I was first put onto this film at a talk where Frank Wilderson compared Django Unchained and Manderlay. It's a great example of a cat countering art with art. Unfortunately it's not nearly well known enough. The whole thing is on you tube however, as well as other Mischeaux films.
