An experiment was conducted at Jineri village, Singida rural to evaluate the effects of 10%(w/v) Tephrosia vogelii (T) and 50%(v/v) rabbit urine (U) on insect pests and yield of cowpea in Singida Tanzania from February 2021 to June 2021. The T and U treatments were mixed in 10% (v/v) sunflower oil, and sterile water and synthetic pesticide (karate 2.5EC) were used as negative and positive control respectively. The experiment was laid down in a complete randomized block design (CRBD) with three replications. The results indicated that there was significant difference (P≤0.001) on insect pest counts between plots sprayed with different treatments. The plots treated with positive control exhibited smaller mean number (4, 7 and 5) followed by OUT formulation (11, 8 and 4) for aphid, leaf miner, and pod borer respectively, at flowering stage, i.e., seventh week after germination. Plots sprayed with sterile distilled water had higher mean numbers of insect pests (25, 20 and 12) for aphid, leaf miner and pod borer respectively, compared with other treatments at flowering stage. The resilts indicate that the OUT formulation improved yield to a degree comparable with that of positive control, as evidenced from their close grain yield values of 794 kg/ha and 846 kg/ha respectively, which are both significantly higher than 483 kg/ha of negative control. Based on the results, the OUT-formulation is recommended for managing cowpea pests in the field.
Typhoid fever is an important cause of disease and death in south east and south central Asia. Itis becoming resistant to more potent drugs such as fluoroquinolones and third generation cephalosporins. It was a descriptive experimental study in which preserved bacterial isolates of multi drug resistant (MDR) Salmonella typhimuirum (n=49) were used. The methods used for antibacterial effect was agar well diffusion method and disc diffusion method for black seed extract and ciprofloxacin respectively, agar dilution method for minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and microtitre checkerboard method for synergism. The antibacterial effect of ethanolic black seed extract by agar well diffusion method did not show any inhibition zone at 100 % concentration v/v. By agar dilution method, the MIC of ciprofloxacin was 0.25 µg/ml, 0.5 µg/ml and 1 µg/ml for 6 isolates (12 %), 2 µg/ml for 20 isolates (40 %), 4 µg/ml for 48 isolates (97 %), 8 µg/ml for 49 isolates (100 %). The extract inhibited 23 isolates (46 %) at 64 % concentration which was the highest concentration used by agar dilution method. The ciprofloxacin and ethanolic black seed extract exhibited synergism against two S. typhimurium isolates, indifference against 45 tested isolates, and not determinable against 2 isolates. A newly tried combination showed to be synergistic against two isolates, indifferent against 45 tested MDR S. typhimurium isolates and not determinable (ND) against 2 isolates.
In the present research we studied the absorption of chloride ions from 100mM NaCl solution by the roots of barley in the presence of NaNO3, Ca(NO3)2 и Na2SO4. The data obtained shows that SO42- ions don’t affect antagonistically on the absorption of chloride ions in barley roots, but high concentrations of NO3 ions have an inhibitory effect. It was determined that the transporters for Cl– и NO3– are probably the same and it can be assumed that the ions of Cl– and NO3– are transported into the plant cells by the same mechanisms
