Featured Article: SYOT
This week's Featured Article is SYOT, or Submit Your Own Tribute.
SYOT is a trope in The Hunger Games fandom where readers would submit characters to an author to include in their Hunger Games fic. There was some variation in the process, but readers would usually submit the details of their character, like name, age, district, face claim, among other information, and then the author would incorporate them into their story.
SYOT fics were popular on FanFiction.net because the site allowed for private messaging, something other fanfiction archives lacked. SYOT were a huge undertaking because the author had to write 24 separate POVs and complete one full cycle of the Hunger Games, resulting in fics of prodigious lengths. For many authors the challenge was too great and the fics became notorious for becoming abandoned WIPs.

“If she came back she’d be hailed a heroine, as for myself, more of a villain.”
This is a Christmas gift for @crop-stomper / @prophetic-duck-drawings! This is one of her characters, Helen Bethel, one of the Victors/mentors in her many SYOTs! Helen is the Victor of the 120th Hunger Games, and she ends up dating the escort in my story, Anakyn Skyavich. Seriously though, she’s a fun, energetic, and very intriguing character to read and draw by herself, so she gets her own drawing!
Helen was first featured in Danzon: The 125th Hunger Games (yes, the same fanfic I did my escort drawing from: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12245444/1/Danzón-The-125th-Hunger-Games), but I’m showing her current appearance in Whims of Fate: The 127th Hunger Games (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13034535/1/Whims-of-Fate-The-127th-Hunger-Games), wearing her Pre-Games Party outfit that I picked out for her in that story. It took me like... 2 months to do the drawing, I think (started in September and finished in October)? But I didn’t get to upload it here or in deviantArt until today, so that’s why it’s a Christmas present.

How We Say Goodbye Moving on. I think there are no two words more daunting than moving on. I mean, my biggest hang up was a celebrity couple who shall not be named and once they’ve burnt out, collapsed and haters danced upon the ashes, there was a small person inside of me who was very afraid of letting go.
I think in a way, everyone of us is anxious to move on.
Because moving on is saying good bye, and saying good bye is making a change, whether big or small, and at the core of it, I believe the change is what scares us more than an actual goodbye.
Old habits die hard as people say, and no truer words have been spoken.
Its hard to break free from your routine, from the things you have gotten used to, from the life you have built. Probably because it means you love these things. Sure, school is a massive headache, and nine times out of ten you wished you were out of it, but school is a comfort, school is what you know. Imagine graduating college and having to find work. Daunting isn’t it?
And then again, of course school brought you your friends, your boyfriend, your girlfriend. School has pretty much shaped your life. And letting go of that - that’s daunting.
Its the same way with moving on.
Moving on means we leave behind a part of ourselves that we had grown accustomed to, something that at one point in our lives we couldn’t have imagined living without.
Moving on means changing who we are.
Moving on means growing.
Its scary to imagine waking up one day being a completely different person, older and wiser.
But change, moving on isn’t all that bad. Because growing means being more than you were. Moving on means being someone better, someone stronger. Moving on makes a better you.
So today you may say goodbye with tears in your eyes and a broken heart, its okay, that’s how we all say good bye. But one day, I hope you’ll realize, the good bye was worth it all.
