r e u n i o n — elena + morrigan

Pride and fear are powerful motivators, becoming an unconquerable force when mixed in the right amount -- - hot and cold air, sliding past one another until a cyclone begins to form. And that’s exactly what motivates some of Morrigan’s more questionable actions. Pride and fear. Though her father may have been the first to withdraw from familial connections, Morrigan followed suit with her head down -- - so of course, vacations in Wales were the first to go. Vacations with other families, powerful families, were abandoned as soon as her mother Mrs. Balfour fell ill.
Elena Vega was an unfortunate casualty. So, of course, Morrigan avoided the sight of her.
Was it a desire to avoid painful conversations that made Morrigan take the long way to classes? Perhaps it’s guilt about her own lack of concern for what the other thought when exchanged letters stopped arriving and vacations abruptly ended. Whatever the case, it’s enough fo a driving force to justify avoiding Elena altogether. Unfortunately, Wardlaw is only so large and running into Elena happened sooner rather than later. By complete happenstance, she finds herself standing by the girl at the sink in the washroom. If she hadn’t been examining her own face with such scrutiny, she would’ve missed the girl completely -- - but instead, she’s standing beside the girl she’s ignored and her throat runs dry. The water running over her fingers and hands grows hotter, hotter, hotter with every second but it’s hardly anything compared to the stinging realization of the conversation that has to take place.
True to herself, Morrigan is a mask of politeness and cordiality. ❝ You look well, Elena. ❞ That’s what estranged friends say, right? That’s what her father says when meeting with people he only sees for business, so why does it feel so hollow coming out of her mouth and hitting the mirror in front of her?
