A goshinboku, or sacred tree, stands in the center of the dimly lit Oshira-dō in Tōno, Iwate Prefecture. Some 1,000 oshirasama, household deities, sit along the red-painted walls, the wooden effigies covered by colorful pieces of cloth inscribed with prayers.

April 29, 2025. I woke up bleary-eyed after another rough night. No espressos in this town, so we headed straight to the train for an early start.
