Vampire [vampyre]
Vampires are folkloric revenants who subsist by feeding on the blood of the living. They are often described as pale "corpses," adopting the pallor of the dead as they are intolerant of direct sunlight. Some are fabled to have bat-like qualities, such as nightmarish wings for efficient hunting. All bear the striking, iconic set of sharp canines that may or may not elongate, depending on the creature.
While there are creatures of vampiric nature in every culture, the most striking vision of our modern-day vampire come from Transylvanian and English roots. Garlic, wild rose, and hawthorn are often used to deter vampires, according to the lore. Other apotropaics include crucifixes, rosaries, and holy water. Vampires are said to be unable to walk on consecrated ground, such as that of churches or temples. In some cultures, vampires do not have a reflection and sometimes do not cast a shadow as a manifestation of their lack of a soul.
