Bakushu Shouten The Bottom Line
Bakushu Shouten is a peculiar place and as I write this, I’m still in two minds whether I liked it or not as it ticked off both positives and negatives. It has craft beer on tap, with plenty of taps to choose from with a decent atmosphere going on, but the service was a bit slack on the day I went there with Dan, and found ourselves wanting something a bit more, especially in terms of serving sizes. The beers came up with too much head, and the food portions were a bit on the small side for how much things cost. The whole place is non-smoking and but doesn’t have WiFi, though with barely no English on the menus, you may struggle if you can’t read katakana. Prices don’t include tax, there is a ¥300 table charge, and there was no happy hour either.
Bakushu Shouten The Full Review
This wasn’t the first bar I went to in Okayama with Dan – aka OneMoreGuyjin. We ended up going to bar that promised craft beer, and that it did. In bottles. At double the prices I’m used to paying. With a tiny space. So we upped and left for this place – imaginatively titled Bakushu Shouten or “Beer Shop” in English. Without realising, Bakushu Shouten is the sister shop to the other shop we quickly walked out of. But at least this place had craft beer on tap and at something resembling prices I’m used to paying.
Bakushu Shouten is located about 10 minutes from JR Okayama station and it opened in November 2019. Bakushu Shouten has space for about 45 people inside, all seated at various booths and tables around the place, which seems to have been decked out in plywood and wood paint. Due to the changes in smoking laws, when I went to Bakushu Shouten it had segregated smoking, but since April 2020, there has been no change in their details so your guess is as good as mine it seems. The dreaded table charge also rears its ugly head, at ¥300 per person, but I really don’t remember what we got for that. After spending so much time in Kyushu, and having gotten used to the free WiFi down there, I was a little disappointed to find out that Bakushu Shouten didn’t have any going.
In terms of taps, Bakushu Shouten has, at the time of writing, the most taps of craft beer in Okayama, with a maximum of 20 taps. However, whether they are all on is another story altogether as during our time at Bakushu Shouten, most of them were either locked up with padlocks on, or the kegs were kicking as we ordered. Sometimes just bad luck I guess. The beers come in three sizes: small (285ml) from ¥580, medium (385ml) from ¥880, and then large (545ml) from ¥980, but then not all sizes of glasses are available for all the beers on tap. Confusing I know! The serving could also be a lot better as there was quite a lot of head on some of the beers we got. There isn’t a happy hour at Bakushu Shouten, nor any beer flight options either.
In terms of food, Bakushu Shouten is mostly based around fried chicken and fried foods, so vegetarians might not have much luck here. Moreover, the portion sizes are a tad on the small size for the prices. If you can’t read kanji or katakana, then you’re going to find it tough to get some things ordered.

Nihonbashi Brewery The Bottom Line
If you’re going to call yourself a brewery and have you own beer on tap, make sure you have plenty of your own beer on tap – and that was the biggest problem with Nihonbashi Brewery, besides some small niggles that you can probably guess. The place promises so much – a great chilled out atmosphere, with some very comfortable seating along with some tasty food. However, the prices do not include tax and there is also a ¥350 table charge outside of the lunch time hours – which gets you a small bowl of malt, not the best offering for you to eat really. There are also some English menus available too and the whole place is non-smoking too.
Nihonbashi Brewery The Full Review
Ningyocho has never been high up on our list of places to visit for craft beer, but there has been a small wind of change in the area, and in November 2016, Nihonbashi Brewery opened up in the eastern part of Tokyo that is probably better known for dolls as during the Edo period, it was a flourishing entertainment district that hosted Kabuki theaters and puppet shows. and sprawling high-rise mansions than for craft beer.
Nihonbashi Brewery is located between Ningyocho and and Bakuroyokoyama stations on the Tokyo Metro. It’s charm lies in the fact that they took inspiration from the Portland brewery HUB (Hopworks Urban Brewery), and that is evident with the amount of wood and also HUB tap handles. However, calling Nihonbashi Brewery a brewery is a slight misnomer, as when you walk in, you may expect to see large brewing vessels and a brewing operation going on, but the actual brewing area is hidden to one side – a shame really in such a busy part of town. This does mean there is more than ample seating space, with space for about 25 people at various tables dotted around the bar, and also another 15 people along the counter that stretches around. However, Nihonbashi Brewery does have a ¥350 table charge and that doesn’t really get you much besides a small bowl of (unused) malt to snack on.
Though there are 13 taps of beer on at Nihonbashi Brewery, on the day we went, only one of those taps was dedicated to their own beers – not really helping push the idea of Nihonbashi Brewery being an actual working brewery. The other taps are sourced from both domestic and overseas, with the beers coming in three sizes: small (200ml) for ¥380, medium (300ml) for ¥580, and large (470ml) for ¥980. None of these prices include tax so make sure you add that on. Moreover, there is no happy hour nor any beer flights, mainly because the small beers are cheap enough to compensate for that according to the water. It’s shame that there are also no takeaway beers seeing as how there is a large residential population in the area, it would have been a good idea to have some crowlers to takeaway.
Where Nihonbashi Brewery does excel is the food and that’s where it seems the food came first and the beer was an afterthought. However, the main downside to the food is that it is all so fancy. All I wanted was some chips – which I got with a large dosing of porcini cream cheese and a ton of bonito flakes on top. Thankfully there were some plates for me to scrape all of the bonito flakes onto, but the chips are damned good. The menus are available in English and there is plenty of choice for vegetarians as well – a welcome change.

Mugi no Oto The Bottom Line
Mugi no Oto is a place I really wanted to like – went in with an open mind, looking forward to some craft beer and relaxing music in the background. I definitely had some beers but the music and prices of beers left me a bit cold, despite the beers being well served. The prices don’t include tax. Perhaps it was my fault for not checking if there is a music schedule but it was neither relaxing nor quiet. The smoking rules are also peculiar, with one end of the bar allowing for smokers, while the opposite end didn’t – very unusual setup. Mugi no Oto also operates a table charge system, so go before 10pm if you don’t want to pay, but if you end up there after 10pm, then it’s ¥500 per person. What was interesting about Mugi no Oto is that you do get two bars for the price of one, with Brian’s Bar offering up spirits at the back. There is free Wifi at the bar with the details posted on the menu, and there is also some English as well. In terms of food, the menus are heavily based around meat.
Mugi no Oto The Full Review
Let’s be honest, if you’ve heard of Kabukicho, then the first thing that comes to mind isn’t craft beer, it’s more than likely the sleazier aspects of Japanese society you’ve thought of. Or perhaps even Yakuza – the famed video game that is set in Kamurocho but we all know in reality is a knock-off of Kabukicho. Clearly the owners of Mugi no Oto, Smappa!Group which run a series of host clubs in the area, though that the area could do with some craft beer, and in March 2019, Mugi no Oto was opened up.
Mugi no Oto is located about 10 minutes walk from Shinjuku or Seibu-Shinjuku station – both of them are about the same distance – but it’s easy to miss the entrance to the bar as only a mere sign greets you, and it’s begging you to know that you can really go in and not be scammed as some people have found to have happened to them in the area. It’s kind of funny how they have to advertise the fact that you can trust them, but hey, it’s Kabukicho. Inside, there is space for about 70 people, with 15 seats at the counter, and then the rest at various low and high tables around the bar. If you going to Mugi no Oto, then make sure you go and finish your evening before 10pm to avoid the table charge, else if you end up staying past 10pm, then you have to pay the dreaded table charge of ¥500 per person. Moreover, the smoking rules in the bar are weird – you can smoke at one end of the bar, closest to Brian’s Bar, but the opposite end of the bar, the music end, is non-smoking.
As an aside, let’s take the opportunity to talk about the atmosphere. Most craft beer bars in Japan have some kind of music playing in the background, with the level just enough to hear it so you can zone out on a conversation, but also not so loud to drown out a conversation if you want to hear it. Mugi no Oto has some live music on various days of the week, but it’s worth checking out the schedule before you go to make sure there is music on that you like.
There are six taps of craft beer on at Mugi no Oto, with most, if not all, dedicated to Japanese craft beer. The beer lists are posted up on their social media feeds on a daily basis, with changes of kegs also posted up too. The beers come in two sizes: half US pint (235ml) from ¥820, and US pint from ¥1,220. Those prices don’t include tax either – so make sure you come with someone who has lots of money or you don’t plan on getting drunk as it could be very expensive. There is a beer flight option, that gets you 3 x 120ml for ¥1,000 if you want to try a few different things. Mugi no Oto also has some cans and bottles for sale, but expect a hefty mark up. While Mugi no Oto does have a happy hour for cocktails and other spirits-based drinks, there is no happy hour for craft beers. Let’s not talk about the imported cans and bottle prices either shall we?
Mugi no Oto prides itself on its sausages with them being made specially for them; however, at two half pints in costing me ¥2,000, I was not in any mood for any sausages nor the other meat-based options on there.

Osaka Craft Brewery The Bottom Line
Osaka Craft Brewery is a beautiful venue with a decent view of the city and plenty of space for large parties. They have a nice food and wine menu, although their craft beer selection is pretty basic. It’s definitely more of an upscale place than most craft beer bars, and as such you can expect to pay higher prices.

Apollo Company One Paragraph Review
I wanted to like Apollo Company very much – it had a nice relaxed atmosphere and tasty food, but the beer sizes are too small for the price and there was way too much head on the beer too. The bar is also fully smoking so give up trying to enjoy the food and beers as well. There was also some table charge to pay as well and tax was not included in the price either. With Sakura Taps just down the road and Charcoal Green Yoshidamachi around the corner, try those places instead for beers and food.
Apollo Company Full Review
I’ve been to Apollo Company before – about seven years ago in 2009, yet I have no recollection of going there. Friends have pictures of me being there so I can only assume we’d been to some izakaya beforehand as very few craft beer places existed in Kannai at the time. Apollo Company is located on a side road just off the side of Yoshida bridge on the canal. It’s pretty easy to find and spot with its bright white doors standing out from the dreary shops that surround it.
Apollo Company advertises itself as “beer + wine = dining” though they do have food there as well otherwise the dining part would be a misnomer. Inside, there are about eight counter seats with two larger four-person tables by the windows and two smaller two-person tables situated on the right as you walk in. When we turned up at 6pm, it was dead quiet though within thirty minutes, the place had filled up with customers and smoke. Not really what I wanted and the owner joined in smoking away. Then the dreaded otoshi turned up which meant a table charge was coming on at the end of the evening.
With that in mind, it was time for beers. Apollo Company has four beers on tap daily, though one of those is dedicated to Sapporo Edelpils – an actually nice macro beer. The beers come in two sizes: small (~200ml) from ¥700 and regular (~350ml) from ¥800. Neither of those prices included tax so be warned about that. I could have handled the price for the beer if it weren’t for the large amount of head being served and the taps being above smoking height. There was no English beer menu either so if you can’t read kanji then ask as the staff can help.
The food at Apollo Company is tasty – very tasty but the portion sizes are just too small for the price. The BeerTengoku staple food of chips came up and was quite large for the price but the tacos…well let’s just say we had finished our beers and were about to leave when they suddenly appeared on the table. And they were small…I mean look at the slice of jalopeño on top compared to the actual size of the taco! While it was tasty, I wish I hadn’t stayed for so long to get it.

Hops125 is an enigma of a place. I had to get that out of my system before I carry on writing. Located on a side street around Ebisu station, Hops125 seems like it has been around for ages yet I’ve only ventured in there twice, perhaps three times, in the last four years or so. Its decorative exterior seems to fit in until you walk around the corner to flames from a Hawaiian restaurant and scaffolding at a bar across the road. Moreover, whenever I’ve wanted to go for a beer there, it’s been closed and when I have called time on my drinking for the evening, Hops125 was open.
Walking into Hops125 is surreal. Part outside bar, part wooden inside, then part secluded, it’s almost trying to great there different zones. We sat down at the table across from the bar just after opening at 7pm and were given 3 or 4 different food and drink menus. Wine. Craft beer. Food. Tapas. Argh. Too much to look at.
Luckily, the beer menu was on top and easy to see. Hops125 features rotating taps, with domestic beers interspersed with foreign beers though they only had three Japanese craft beers from Ushitora were all that was on. A good choice though much narrower than the last time we went. Beers come in two sizes; either a regular 350ml from ¥950 or a large 470ml from ¥1150. Those prices included tax yet you had to ask how much each beer costs. It’s never a nice experience asking how much something costs, especially beer, so you either suck it up or go somewhere else. Both of the Ushitora’s we had were tasty though the price did nag at our brains.
The food menu is vast and expansive and encompasses lots of different styles though Hops125 specializes in the stinkiest of meats: lamb. Again, prices are not cheap and disappointingly, portions are small. As a tester, we ordered some chips that turned out to be wedges and got 14 chips at about ¥650. After two beers and those wedges, we decided to call it quits and headed back to ABC in Hiroo.
Hops125 One Paragraph Review
At the expensive end of craft beer prices in Tokyo, Hops125 runs Craft Hands a close second for breaking the wallet. The atmosphere is nice and chilled though it’s not enough to really balance the cost when there are cheaper and more viable alternatives in Shibuya and Roppongi.

How to Get to Hops125
Hops125 is best accessed from Ebisu station, either from the west exit of the JR station. or the from the Metro Hibiya line. It’s about a five-minute walk.
Some #craftbeer in #ebisu #tokyo finally! bring a rich friend though. Hops125 in Ebisu Hops125 is an enigma of a place. I had to get that out of my system before I carry on writing.
The craft beer scene and rock music seem to go hand in hand. A few bars that we’ve been to for BeerTengoku, such as Thrash Zone in Yokohama, and Beer Cafe Bakujun is no exception It isn’t the easiest place to find though we heard the strains of Green Day’s American idiot punctuating the quiet Kyoto night. If it hadn’t been for the music, then we would never have found Beer Cafe Bakujun and would have spent the remainder of our evening getting more lost.
The man on the right has some working knowledge of English.
Beer Cafe Bakujun seems to be following the minimalist concrete design of hipster bars in Tokyo. The bar was half full at 11pm on a Friday night with about five of the ten seats at the bar talking and the atmosphere was relaxed and jovial. The bartenders were the centre of attention and were pouring out customers various beers that didn’t appear on the menu, such as Baeren’s Vintage Chocolate Stout and Sankt Gallen Orange Chocolate Stout for fun. One of the bartenders had a working knowledge of English and started up a conversation about Tokyo and Yokohama.
Some good choices – especially the Baird Ganko Oyaji Barley Wine 2014.
The beer selection at Beer Cafe Bakujun was dominated by Japanese craft beer with a couple of beers from over seas. The sticking point though is the prices. Beer cafe Bakujun is not the cheapest place in Kyoto but could be pushing for one of the most expensive. Beers come in two sizes, halfs at 284ml or US pint size at 473ml. Prices vary from beer to beer, with the cheapest being ¥756 for a half of Ise Kadoya Brown ale ranging up to ¥1512 for a US pint of Baird Ganko Oyaji Barley Wine 2014 which include tax. Moreover, the dreaded table charge pops up at ¥324 as well, so you end up paying ¥1000 for half a beer before you even get a sip.
We only managed to stay for two drinks as at these prices, it’s hard to justify staying for many. We had to have the Baird Ganko Oyaji Barley Wine 2014 and glad we did. The original malt notes had developed into flavours of prunes and caramel that were incredibly balanced. The customer next to use wanted to have a pint of the beer but both the bartender and myself warned against him. The Coedo Beniaka beer was brewed using the new recipe from Coedo though we didn’t detect much difference as we didn’t have the previous iteration to compare it against.
Beer Cafe Bakujun also had a fairly extensive food menu; however, the prices of the beers had put us off from ordering anything. The food was freshly cooked on the premises as some people did order some bits and pieces
Beer Cafe Bakujun One Paragraph Review
Beer Cafe Bakujun is a relaxed bar that has some decent craft beers on tap. However, the prices of beer and food, along with a table charge, means a simple one or two beers and some snacks means a bill easily of ¥4,000 or more.
