Stevey B. Tells of the Early Days of Deadly D., the PNWs Rising Hip Hop Band
How long have you been rapping?
“I started rapping in 2001 as a freshman in high school. What started as writing rhymes in class to make people laugh quickly grew into writing and recording songs. In 2003, I met Michael Pianki, who was on the school's basketball team and discovered he rapped as well. We started working together and formed Deadly Duo, aka Deadly D.”
How did you get started?
“After years of rapping as a hobby, we decided to take it to the next level and pursuit our music professionally. In 2011, we performed our first live show in South Florida and quickly learned this was a viable career option. Since relocating back to Bellingham, WA we have developed into a live band with drums, guitar, trumpet, DJ and a female vocalist. We have played shows across the state, as well as Oregon, Idaho, Montana and British Columbia; numerous festivals, including Seattle's Hempfest in 2014; and have even won a few awards, including the IMEA Award's Hip Hop Duo of the year and their song, “Light Side of the Moon” was nominated for IMEA’s Hip Hop Song of the Year!”
Why Conscious Hip Hop?
“With many different musical influences and interests, our style of hip hop has naturally translated into what some call "conscious." We choose to use our musical platform to do more than just entertain. We make it a point to challenge ourselves by making commercially viable music that provides a positive message as well.”
Who has influenced you musically?
“With so many musical influences to credit, naming them all would be would be almost impossible. We have such a deep appreciation for many different genres of music. As far as hip hop goes, some of the artists that have helped mold us into who we are today would be Pharoahe Monch, Outkast, Atmosphere, Nas, 2Pac, DMX, The Roots, Royce Da 5'9, Zion I, Eminem, Tech N9ne, K'Naan, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony and many, many more.”
