I’d be lying if I said this wasn’t a little bit inspired by @catefrankie saying that never grow up is a song about Damon as a dad.

the worst best couple ever
lethargic-hunter
It had been a time just like any other. The two hunters were out gathering supplies before the survivors showed up—but these ones were ruthless. They dove for the two infected and split them apart, giving chase even if they weren’t attacking them. It was like a game to them, using only melee weapons and taking cheap shots.
"Jay! Get home to Ben, you know the way!"
Aiden tried desperately to lead the survivors out of the building, away from Jay so the smaller of the two could escape and hurry home. That was always the plan; Jay was smaller than he was, and not as agile, or nimble as Aiden was. His eyesight was piss-poor compared to Aiden’s, so the larger of the two often took the route of being the scapegoat, making room for them to get away.
Only this time, Aiden wasn’t as lucky.
He didn’t notice the second survivor hiding just around the corner, and before the hunter could stop and redirect himself, he was met with a single blow to the head. The baseball bat collided with his skull, sending Aiden’s head back with a sharp snap, as the rest of his body followed the momentum of his running and flipped under him, causing the hunter to land right on the backside of his neck, slamming the back of his head down into the floor.
A sickening crackling sound buzzed in his ears, like crumpling paper, or a plastic wrapper.
Aiden lay still, his arms twitching and his eyes wide to their full extent. He could make out the sudden rush of copper in his throat, choking him and causing him to throw it up, but he could no longer move any part of his body. The hunter’s vision had been reduced to a trembling visual of blurs and speckles of red, unable to see the figure standing beside him, and lifting the bat up for one final blow. Not that it mattered if he was struck again; the damage had already been done, he wasn’t going to recover from this.
He wanted to run- by God did he want to run- but leaving Aiden wasn't on his list of things to do today. There were more survivors than his older brother could cope with, he trusts you as being a good scapegoat but today something felt wrong. If these guys are doing this for fun there's a guarantee they'll try and be smart about it.
With a growl, he sets down the supplies atop the roof and pounces straight back down-- Aiden please be okay, please please please---- He sees the bat crack down atop of his brother's head, red filling his vision as he screeches with a vengeance.
NOBODY HURTS HIM.
Nobody.
Claws twitch as he pounces upon the nearest survivor, biting deep into their throat and causing them to gag upon their own blood, distracting the man with the bat long enough to pounce him down to the floor, pinning his arms and digging claws into him. A low growl bubbles from past his lips, shredding his arms as he struggles-- he'd normally be easy to throw off.
But this time he means w a r.
Nails dig into the flesh of him, tearing open his clothes before digging into his chest and tearing tearing tearing tearing anything that he can grab hold of, teeth bury themselves into frightened hands and finally into the man's throat-- hard enough to puncture as shark-esque teeth easily pull the flesh away. Hands attempt to stifle the blood flow, but Jay doesn't care about you.
His rage dies in his stomach as he leaps to Aiden's side, flipping him so that he's at least able to cough up the blood spilling out of his mouth. Goddamnit Aiden why did you tell him to leave, why didn't you escape with him! Arms wrap around his elder brother, a gentle whine passing cracked and bloodied lips easily ignoring the choking behind him.
You're bleeding from your head and fuck it Aiden you--
"Brother..."
Perhaps his rage hadn't died just yet, words somehow spilling out of his lips as grief overtakes all feelings, holding his brother close to his chest as tears laced with flecks of debris cascade down his cheeks. Claws carefully holding the wound as if stifling the blood flow would help somehow. He knows it's futile, a head wound would practically mean a death sentence...
How's he going to tell Ben this?
His tongue flicks out to lap at your face---
"Do-n't.... Di e.... No-t.... Now...."
