late night @ one of gowyu’s headquarters
hearts’ territory; january 14th 2021 @achelois50168
Gowyu was relaxing on the couch, a table in between him and the man on the other couch utilizing the surface of the wooden table to align the gold amassed during the night. The man was a teller of sorts, or rather, he worked with Gowyu in procuring him in the quickest way possible with an adequate conversion of all the coins the lowlives who came to gamble had with them. He hadn’t been an easy find, neither had he been an easy fish to hook and capture, but he’d been worth it so far. Which didn’t mean that once Gowyu could find even better, he wouldn’t dispose of him properly.
Everything was disposable, and could be upgraded. If he let himself grow attached to the point of thinking what he had, and the people who worked for him now, were going to be with him for the rest of his growth, he’d be losing. Loyalty only sounded sweet when the ones under your thumbs didn’t have anything to bring you down, but it didn’t mean they weren’t looking. Gowyu knew for a fact that given the chance, none of these men he had right now would stick around for longer than they had to. That was why he’d never be bothered about making sure they didn’t.
They were all eventually going to die before him, anyways. He held the ever diminishing length of the cigar up at the ceiling, puffing out a bout of smoke when the door burst open with frantic footsteps entering. The men he currently had guarding him were quick to intercept whoever had come in and Gowyu turned to see a hunched figure, bent over by the arms that were locked in by the strength of his men.
“Please, I need to speak to you, you have to help us!” The voice that came to his ears was alarmed, sounded rough, but more importantly--it was deliciously desperate.
Now tonight had been uneventful and he’d planned on it being that way, but Gowyu was going to give into this bliss, because he knew the face of that man. A man who had been tenacious in not giving over the ownership of a certain shop that Gowyu had his eyes on. He knew the face with more determination, and less of that pathetic look on his face now. It made Gowyu sit up and crush the butt of his cigarette, his interest was slightly piqued. It had to stay that way, otherwise, the land would be his by blood, and the only one who would be to blame would be this damned fool.
With a sign of his head and his hands, he motioned for his men to let go of the poor unfortunate one. Once Gowyu did so, he crawled closer, his hands together as if he was praying to one of his gods. That was futile, mercy did not exist in these quarters. But Gowyu would entertain it, for as long as he deemed necessary. A few words in and the idea became blatantly clear. The man knelt in his room was asking for his child to be saved. Of all useless things to tend to on such a perfect day.
But the sweet mantra of I’ll do anything, please sir, help us, he’s dying and my friend has had only praises for what you’ve done for them when their kin were riddled with diseases. Anything, I’ll do anything, anything.
Anything was quite the magic word.
So, that was how Gowyu ended up sending for a messenger to fetch that lovely good for something healer down on Clubs’ territory while the child was presented to him, and oh, did Gowyu enjoy the sight of the suffering little body laid down on a set of clothes that were immediately soaked in blood and sweat the moment the child’s body touched it. Not because the child was suffering, although that played a part in it, but because this was bad. This was so bad, that he wasn’t even sure he knew what the man expected. A miracle maybe?
Well, whatever his expectations were, Gowyu had the desolate man signing a piece of paper with some conditions while they waited for the healer. Business before anything. Then he crouched by the side of the dying child with the man knelt and holding onto the hand of the sick, Gowyu made sure to not turn his nose up at the sight of the child, but it was hard not to. Because the poor thing also had a stench with him, as if he was rotting from within. That’d take days to scrub off his floor, he’d make sure the dad was put in charge of that task.
But first to fake a bit of kindness to appease the man, less bite in his words and more softness, just the way his mother loved hearing him talk. “Do not fret, I’ve only called upon the best of healers in the city, and he’ll make sure your child recuperates in no time.”
That was not his promise to make, but he did it anyways exactly because it was not. Also because it made the man holding onto his sick child look at Gowyu like a benevolent man that held all the hope of a life not ending in his hand, just the effect he’d desired to have. Gowyu rose from his position to go light another cigarette with the satisfaction that a done deal always left him reeling with.
The night would grow to be a fascinating one; if the child were to die.
