For years, getting having a disability spelled a certain fate for the individual afflicted with the disability. Here on our dis(ability) We believe that a disability does not always have to spell out a negative prognosis for an individuals. It’s not a subtraction of their persona, put perhaps a characteristic that is only amplified by their predisposition. Without the disability, or with the cover up of a disability, a person’s true colors and nature may not be discovered and true potential by being themselves is an extremely real possibility. Take Stephen Hawking for example: a cis, Caucasian man who has been diagnosed with the debilitating illness of ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease. This disease severely impairs an individual’s ability to ambulate, and perform normal activities of daily living, and would ultimately end in death for its afflicted individuals by shutting down their ability to breath and eat. Hawking has powered through this adversity, and with good spirit as well. Hawking is the image of intelligence and talent nowadays, and he lives with a “disability” but still smashes down walls to the stigma of disability. Ultimately, our goal and vision is to spread awareness about the disparaging state of matters in which individuals view the “disabled”. Essentially, what started out as a simple project for class has manifested itself in this vehicle of social media.
