SARAH BRANDNER | Talbot Runhof Spring-Summer 2022.
If you could style Kate for her recent portrait, what would be your ideal look?
This was tougher than it sounded. I wanted to stick with a cocktail dress that would work with the Cambridge Pearl Pendant Brooch. Since she wore something that was already in her closet, I decided to choose a repeat, but I also chose a new dress just for fun. For both looks, I would've gone with the same jewelry she wore in the portrait, and I would've done her hair down but a bit curlier than it is in the portrait.
For the repeat, I would've chosen the red Preen dress she wore in Canada in 2016. I would've styled it with the same shoes she wore with the dress the first time.
Finding a new cocktail dress that would work with the brooch and fit Kate’s style was not easy. I ended up with this Talbot Runhof design. Talbot Runhof is a German label, but I imagine she wanted to go with a British designer for the portrait. In that case, Alexander McQueen could’ve probably easily made her a custom piece similar to this one. The blue color of this dress is definitely more expected for Kate, but I would’ve actually liked her to wear it in a dark green. The green color of the The Vampire’s Wife dress looked stunning in the portrait. Generally, I’m not a fan of jacquard dresses, but I think the texture would look nice in the painting.
