Philip Tan - TaleWeaver
May I ask one more Writer Asks question? If so, #36 (the "write what you know' one).
Ooh Yeah! I still had the questions saved just in case!
36. They say to Write What You Know. Setting aside for a moment the fact that this is terrible advice...what do you Know?
There’s a post going around that points how how it’s not actually terrible advice
I agree that the advice is usually oversimplified to the point of uselessness, and I do think Tolkien is a great example but my reasoning is more that he wrote what he cared about. That said, I think it’s a good post.
But what do I know?
I don’t know what I know enough to know if it’s even worth writing about. Lessee here…
I know something about herbs, and bits and pieces of history that interest me. Not all of it medieval history (I know people have always been people no matter what year it is). I’ve experienced how even something terrible that’s happened can be the way God brings about something else that’s very good. I know choosing kindness is sometimes easier than at other times, but no matter how hard it is it’s always worth it —even if the fruits aren’t showing up right away. I know that sometimes a hard task in front of us is God preparing us for a harder one but he doesn’t leave us to face it alone.
None of this is something that only I know, but hopefully the way I put it together will be worth it anyway.
For the writing asks: 1, 8, 28, 31?
1. What font do you write in? Do you actually care or is that just the default setting?
It’s been Palatino for a while, but as an experiment I tried switching the chapter I’m currently working on to Chalkboard SE (trying the comic sans trick, but without having comic sans available in Scrivener)
It kinda works, but it’ll be changed back to Palatino or some other more professional looking one after I’m finished with it. I do think the comic sans trick is just a more extreme version of something I’ve already found out about myself, in that switching up my font sometimes jolts me out of writers block.
8. If you had to write an entire story without either action or dialogue, which would you choose and how would it go?
I’ve actually written a (very short) story in first person present tense which has no dialogue! It was a style experiment that I really liked the results of. I do love dialogue though, and have an awful lot of it with no action as it is. Sometimes when I’m having trouble with a scene I try scripting it, which means I get to relax about dialogue tags and making sure I don’t have just talking heads. I get to fix that later. When I know what actions someone takes, I describe it in a bare bones fashion
28. Who is the most delightful character you’ve ever written? Why?
Delightful to me or to the other characters? They’re all rewarding, but it was a blessed day that I came up with Wynn. Not only is it fun to think of how he’d phrase something, how he thinks, he also gave me the key to connecting the two main stories together.
31. Write a short love letter to your readers.
You READ my work? You read my work like it brings you happiness? OH! Love for readers! Love for readers for One Thousand Years!
That sounds flippant but I mean it! Ahh, but to show I’m not being hyperbolic:
If you’ve read my work when you could be reading a million other things, things that are finished and polished and have reviews and blurbs, things that have fan bases you can squeal collectively with about this or that character, or rage at the villains or just kind of stare in awe at the themes, if you’ve put time into peeping into this messy world, well that means a lot to me and I hope you enjoy it. To those see a story in here worth the telling, and who help me tell it better, I am extremely grateful beyond anything I can express.
perspective
The word wasn't in there but I think I might be using this
maybe all he needed was a good nights sleep for a fresh perspective
Or some variation. Thanks for playing!
