Codex Pt. 1

i’ve had a real hankering to write lately and i love the awesome @ematis‘ ocs, so i’ve made some codex entries for them! please go check out her blog if you haven’t already - it’s amazing and there’s so much good content there. 

here i’ve written 3 entries one for Yara of Clan Halveri, Talim Lavellan, and Eulalia “Eulie” Calais di Angelo. 

now onto the codex entries (i put most of them under the cut for length)

1. Yara of Clan Halveri

Our scout of the Western Approach yielded more results than expected. We found the Grey Wardens holed up in one of the few remaining structures – a Dalish clan, apparently known as the Halveri, assisted us. If it weren’t for them, we never would have found the Wardens. The Elvhen are cautious of our troops but it’s likely only because of the recent conflict. A young woman named Yara has proven especially helpful and led us directly to the Wardens in exchange for information on the situation in the Approach. Yara is a skilled negotiator and seems to be the face of trade for the Halveri.

The Halveri have been doing healthy trade here – perhaps we should reconsider our existing sources of information. More trade goods should secure an alliance for the Inquisition.

2. Talim Lavellan

Perhaps I shouldn’t have been sneaking around the kitchens that day, or perhaps not. Andraste wants us to see what she wants us to see, does she not? If she didn’t want me to see the cooks adding a little spice to the kitchen using their dicks, well that was just unfortunate. She should know I sneak around more than any good author should. So my defense is perfectly normal, and when I say I didn’t mean to hear anything that annoyingly boring day, I wouldn’t lie. Dwarves’ honour.

Anyway, Dorian was talking with Lynda, one of the cooks’ assistants, and Maker’s tits, his voice couldn’t have been louder if he’d taken a blood magic spell to the streets of Kirkwall. Or if he were a mage trying to whisper in a Circle, but whatever. Important thing was, Dorian was talking. Loudly. And I happened to be there to listen.

‘I swear, if he asks me one more time to just put the belt away, Dorian,’ he whined, doing a surprisingly poor imitation, ‘I’m going to turn him into a spirit for a day. We’ll see how he likes that!’ A pause, and I casually looked around the corner to see Dorian sitting on a counter, legs crossed and reading a bottle of wine. As usual. ‘Is this from the Hinterlands?’ He cast it aside. ‘Ugh, that stuff reeks. What do you put in it, Druffalo urine? Did you know he couldn’t sleep without the light on? And I make a pun once and he withholds sex for a week! Barbaric. Never mind his seemingly pathological need to steal, though I will admit it has its… Advantages at times. Still, though, convincing him to give anything back is like convincing him to part with a limb! And don’t forget –‘

‘Dorian?’ Lynda asked, turning I-am-so-done eyes on him. ‘If you hate Talim so much, why do you stay with him?’

The most graceful man himself blushed – I couldn’t believe my eyes. ‘Because I love him,’ he practically whispered to himself, smiling so softly I almost felt awkward. Almost. ‘And besides, I like to hear the sound of my own voice, so I’m sure I’m blowing it out of proportion. After all, my voice is possibly the most exquisite –‘

I didn’t even bother staying after that – Dorian’s ego needs no witnesses. Besides, a certain silver-haired elf would birth halla at this news.

3. Eulalia “Eulie” Calais di Angelo

The spirits seem to like her. Witnessing such an event… I am unsure if it has ever been done. Seeing one commune with the spirits as if they were the oldest of friends – this is something I would never have dared to imagine. Quite unlike any elf of her ilk, Eulalia Calais di Angelo seems to be a conductor for spirit activity, and I find she acts as if she were a confidant. Spirits whisper secrets to her; secrets of their lives, of their past, of who they are now. One particularly intelligent spirit even gave their best impression of the Fade. You may find my notes of the encounter attached. When I asked di Angelo if she may have any idea why spirits flock to her, she seemed evasive. A secret-keeper, is Eulalia. Perhaps this stems from her distrust of Academics, in particular. To her, I am but an armchair historian: watching and not acting. The Avaar are the closest comparisons I can draw to her communions with spirits – as they also converse with spirits. However, this is a pale comparison and the situations are markedly different.

Having since discovered her origins as a Tevinter slave, I do believe I can elaborate on why the spirits are so close to Eulalia. I believe they feel a sense of kinship – a sense of ‘slavery to the Fade’, so to speak. Perhaps this is naught but conjecture. However, my informants tell me that Eulalia’s greatest fears are that of being invisible – of being seen but never acknowledged, witnessed but never validated by those she loves. Such are the fears of a freedwoman. I believe the spirits, human as they once were, share her fears and understand them. Maybe Eulalia shall become as famous as the Herald, and perhaps she shall fade into obscurity and become nothing more than urban legend. Only time will tell.

Nothing Hurt But Your Pride [Emma Sparrow/Talim Lavellan]

A (slightly late) OC kiss week drabble for my dear @saltquizzy, featuring her Talim and his unfortunate discovery of just how tricky Emma Sparrow can be.  ~1060 words. Set in an AU where Lailani Lavellan is the Inquisitor and Tasalin Lavellan is alive and with the Inquisition instead of Eren.

“Pulling punches today, are we?”

Ignoring him as usual, Sparrow didn’t pull the next one, but she didn’t land it either; Talim threw a forearm between the vicious fist and his chin with no time to spare, and a jeering smirk spread across his face as he locked eyes with her.  As much effort as the taciturn little woman expended to avoid people, eye contact had little effect on her.  Some people like that could be more like dogs, lashing out or becoming reckless from sheer discomfort at being looked dead in the eyes, but not Sparrow.  Sparrow stared back, taking nothing from his attempts to unsettle her and giving him nothing to work with, either, save for a momentary mimic of his expression.  

Short strands of her red curls hung in front of her face, having found their way out of the large, twisted bun in the back of her head, and sweat glistened over her bare arms even in the chill mountain air as she shoved away from him and reset her stance before attacking him again.  Talim’s own were spotted with gooseflesh, and a little red, but he would endure; he had to.  Despite barely standing as tall as his shoulders, Sparrow possessed formidable skill, but skill he’d matched evenly from the beginning; not once had they fought each other beyond a draw, and he certainly wasn’t about to be bested now, not by the likes of her.  If she could spar with bare arms in the cold, so could he.  

Talim attempted a hard downward strike towards her chest; anything higher was too easy for her to simply duck beneath, leaving his legs and abdomen open to counterattack, but this was just low enough that she couldn’t.  She’d have to block the blow, or take it, before she could counter, which would in turn give him all the time he needed to deduce what she would do next.  

She blocked, folding her arm in front of her to absorb the impact.

Good, just as I expected…

Talim resisted the thought that she was becoming predictable, but smirked at her again nonetheless.  She countered quickly with a hard right that just grazed his ribs as he moved deftly to the side, and sent one long leg back towards her head.  She ducked, of course, but he’d moved too far for her to have the reach to counter right away.  What Sparrow lacked in reach, however, she more than made up for in speed and endurance, and their battle was a heated storm of limbs once more in no time at all.  

“Getting tired?” Sparrow asked, barely audible as she caught her breath, taunting him even in her lack of inflection as she once again managed to outmaneuver his strikes.  She knew he wasn’t, and neither was she; in all likelihood, she was simply growing bored.

“Not in the slightest,” he rebuked, feigning an easier time than he actually had dodging away from her next attack.  “You done being lazy?”

The wind picked up for a moment, and behind the curls blowing in her face, Talim could’ve sworn he caught the slightest glimpse of a twitch at the corner of her stone-set mouth.

“As you wish.”

This was the real fun, when Sparrow stopped absorbing his teasing and started throwing it back at him with her punches.  When her feet barely touched the ground for her movements, her more acrobatic and overwhelming attacks, and he had to stop and wonder for just a moment between dodging and deflecting and attempting to counter, if she wasn’t secretly using magic to be able to do it.  Tsk tsk, little Sparrow…

Finally, a break: an aerial kick missed, landing her off balance and directly next to him with a stone wall behind her, and Talim grabbed firmly ahold of her, pinning her hard against the wall.

“If this is too much for you, we can just stop.”  The smile he offered her was far beyond smug now; this was gloating, plain and simple.  She had no recourse from this position unless he’d let her, and he certainly had no intention of that.  He’d bested her, and he wanted her to know it.  “I’ve seen all your tricks, little Sparrow.  Try anything you want; I’ll be ready for it.”

Sparrow glowered up at him for a moment that seemed to linger far beyond what it actually was, and, before Talim knew what was happening, her head rushed towards his.

A headbutt?  Now?  What is she-

His thoughts were irrevocably derailed as, instead of lowering her forehead and smashing it into the bridge of his nose, as he expected, she pressed her lips hard against his.  

The heat of her mouth on his couldn’t have been there for more than a moment, but the damage was done.  Talim could only stare, wide-eyed and completely incapable of speech, as the red curls and freckles, and those deadpan ice green eyes, retreated from him back to where he held her against the wall.  He didn’t even notice the subtle movement of one foot behind his, and as his mind searched frantically for what in the names of all the Creators he could possibly say, he relaxed his cold, goosefleshed arms just a bit too much.

Another moment passed with no words, and his eyes locked on hers, before she quickly shoved at his shoulders, hard.  Talim tripped on the foot she’d surreptitiously snaked behind his, and landed on his back with a winded grunt. 

Once he caught his breath and was finally able to make sense of what the fuck just happened, his hands flew to his forehead as he admonished himself with a disappointed sigh, torn between frustration and amusement that he’d actually fallen for that.  Truthfully, he was surprised she hadn’t tried it sooner.  Or, that he hadn’t thought of it first.  

Sparrow crouched beside him a moment later, straight-faced as usual, and offered her hand.  Talim accepted reluctantly, not only still unsure of what to say, but what, exactly, he should do with his face.  She was no help, as her mouth didn’t move from that hard set straight line the entire time she helped him to his feet, nor did her eyes move from his face, ready to meet his again once he’d somewhat dusted himself off.  He really should’ve known she’d have no intention whatsoever of letting him off that easy.

“Perhaps you will be ready next time.”

Talim ‘I’m so done with everything’ Lavellan

18 (Biggest insecurity) for Talim and 20 (Role Model) for Lailani? if you're still doing them of course :)

TalimBiggest Insecurity:Talim has exactly zero physical insecurities. He knows he’s a babe.But Talim’s biggest insecurity is more deeply rooted in him like his personality. His biggest insecurity is that he as a person is unlovable that he wasn’t made for any kind of romantic relationship and probably only has “overprotective uncle” material. That only someone as nice as Lailani could tolerate him and that she probably only does it out of some misguided sense of empathy.

Lailani Role Model:Her biggest role models are her mother and Talim. Her mother is very distant because of how dedicated she is to her job as Warleader and to the safety of Clan Lavellan but Lailani found it admirable and she wishes to have the same sense of duty. She is very dedicated to The Mission™. Talim has taught Lailani basically everything in her mother’s absence it’s hard to place exactly what he to her he’s been a teacher, a friend, a vague authority figure, family. She admires his intelligence, and how resolute he is in his decisions. She often finds herself wondering what Talim would do in big decision making. that answer is usually murder so she has to take out a few options and figure what what he would choose out the non murderous ones
