Jasper is working on two hand choice. I present two objects, or one object and an empty hand, and he headbutts the one he wants. He clearly does know how this works, as I asked him to choose between wet food and kibble the other night and the response was very clear, even when I swapped them and asked again.

However, when asked which brush he wanted this morning, he simply body-slammed all three that I was holding up. False dichotomy, apparently - he will have ALL of the brushies, thank you very much.

Biggie: Hey, are you gonna finish that hotdog sandwich?

Me: *Startled* Um, did you just... talk?

Biggie: Yeah, I've been meaning to have a chat with you. You know, about those times you forgot to feed me and my brothers?

Me: This is... unexpected. But, sure, what's on your mind?

Biggie: Well, I was thinking I could have longer time in the living room to sleep? And, oh, those green treats you give me? Not bad, but variety wouldn't hurt.

Me: *Trying to process* Okay, longer living room time and more green treats. Got it. Anything else?

Biggie: Yeah, I'd appreciate it if you'd stop carrying me for so long. It gets kinda painful, you know?

Me: I'm sorry, I didn't realize. I'll make more time for us together.

Biggie: Thanks. Now, about that hotdog sandwich...

Jasper's button ran out of batteries and he has OPINIONS about it.

Darkness. We can faintly hear a button press sound and a dying electronic device say something like "catnurg" before cutting out.

A woman's voice says "is your button running out of battery? Mm? You mashed it too many times?"

The button clicks again and a light turns on, showing a small, grumpy-looking tabby cat sitting in a shallow box filled with recordable buttons. They are round, about four inches in diameter, and are labeled things like "want," "look," "brushed," and "catnip." The cat is repeatedly pressing "catnip", which is the source of the button sound.

The voice softly says "okay," and we cut to text that reads "A few moments later." There is a noise like someone touched the mic, and the light comes back on, showing the cat and a hand holding the "catnip" button. The woman sets down the button and says "yeah?"

The cat immediately activates the button using a one-pawed kneading motion, and it says "catnip" loudly and clearly. The woman says "all fixed?" and puts the button back in the box with the others. The cat steps into the box and proceeds to press "treat." The woman laughs softly and says "you've got a lot of ideas" as he also pushes "game." "Game" sounds again and she adds "a LOT of ideas."

Adventures with a "talking" cat

We called my partner on the phone today, as he's on a trip. I put him on speaker and let him talk to both cats, as you do. Hazel, our normal cat, was unimpressed. Jasper, however, went to his board and pushed "[partner's name]. Bored. Love you. Play.", which we decided was probably something like "Dad, I'm so glad you're here! No one is playing with me and I'm sooo bored!"

His dad, of course, responded with "that sounds awful! Why aren't you playing with him?"

At which point Jasper, who probably does not understand sarcasm but definitely knows the word "play" when he hears it, put all his weight on the "play" button and did not let up until I played with him.

Jasper has learned to combine "want" and "love you" to let me know he wants attention. Unlike his other demands (want play, bored, want mom, come look) this one involves a lot of purring and weaving around legs. Unclear if he wants me to come pet him, or if it's more of "I would like wrap myself around you." Probably both.

I have also noticed that he responds to a "love you" from me with the same little flick of his tail he gives when I stroke him. If you have a cat, you know the one - the one where they straighten the tail, and then it curls upward, and if you keep stroking it comes up a bit more each time until it's winding around your arm. It's so cool to see him respond to my communication with such clear, appropriate body language (and he genuinely seems to enjoy hearing that I love him).
