The observation you bring back to me is really interesting, especially because Teppei's character (in my opinion) is one of the most complex and least predictable in the entire work.
✏️ Let' start from the facts!
As confirmed by the author, the two had a few dates, and as reported here, with an opinion I partly share. I think the point of no return was Teppei's injury as well , but I don't think the reason for the break-up was a personal Iron-hearted reaction, rather a consequence of things.
Riko and Teppei are similar because they love basketball and both want to take their team to a high level, they probably found each other cute but… I think they are quite incompatible.
Riko is decisive, rather straightforward and sometimes insensitive.
Kyoshi is quite the opposite, and has his own private bubble which remains rather impenetrable because it is defended with all his forces. This trait might be divisive, is difficult to accept in my opinion for some part of the couple, because either you are very mature and understand, or you feel cut off.
So I think that the relationship wore off itself, naturally. Maybe Riko is still a little attached to him, but on the other hand Teppei is unreadable.
Hyuuga, on the contrary, will be a very good leader when he learns to contain his emotions and his particular character. I think he is better matched with her precisely because of the lively exchange they would have, even if not always productive, but I also know that he would always give in because he has an obvious crush on Riko.
