I Installed Masonry Screws in My Garage
I got a good deal on some industrial-duty steel shelves that I decided to install in my garage. The mounting directions were demanding for screwing or bolting the shelves to the concrete floor and wall, but I was not sure how to do that.
Then I decided to use hex head masonry screws. These screws for concrete are sturdy enough for this type of installation and are very easy to install. They don't need the utility of additional plastic or metal anchors, so there's little more to do than the drill, clean, and drive.
First, start with a best-quality fastener, such as a ¼-inch Tapcon Cap screws. To figure out the correct fastener length, add an inch to the breadth of the item you wish to mount. It's extremely significant to choose the right length of the screw, since much of the fastener's power is consequent from how deeply it's fixed. However, more is not essentially better. Increased depth can lead to fixing issues, such as stripped fasteners and problems in boring holes. In your situation, you shouldn't require fasteners lengthier than 1¼ inches. Increasing the depth of the hole to 1½ inches requests problems, especially in concrete that has a high tensile strength [over 5000 psi] or is composed of hard or large aggregate.
You're almost ready. Assemble the shelves and position them in a row. Drill through a couple of mounting holes into the concrete by the use of a hammer drill. Be sure to use the bit size quantified by the fastener manufacturer. Most ¼-inch fasteners need a 3/16-inch bit, and sometimes the correct bit comes bundled with the fasteners. Also, the bit has to fit through the mounting hole without touching metal. If you require to enlarge the holes to fit the drill bit, be careful not to eliminate too much metal and weaken the shelf. And use a bit for drilling metal, not a drill bit.
Make each hole just a section deeper than the length of the embedded fastener, contingent on the directions for the screw. Once you're done with drilling, clean the dust from the hole you’ve drilled. Concrete fasteners can't develop their rated power when they're driven into debris-containing holes.
Drive these initial mounting screws prudently with a wireless drill. Once the shelf is protected, bore the remaining holes, and drive the rest of the fasteners. Make sure you don't overtighten, which can cause them to pull out. Check the torque quantified by the manufacturer; for example, a ¼-inch masonry screw needs only 15 foot-pounds of torque to be tightened when driven into concrete, and 10 foot-pounds when driven into a hollow masonry block.
