"I can't breathe"
Her eyes snapped open and were immediately invaded by a flood. As she sits up slowly to position herself comfortable in an upright position, she felt her tears sliding down her cheeks like a hot trail of fire.
"I can't breathe"
She stares into the night through the window just beside her bed trying to find some form of solace in the darkness. She found none.
"I can't breathe"
She blinks again, clearing the blurred vision in an instant. Drip.Drip.
"I can't breathe..."
She sighs to herself and gently wipes away the tears. She sighs for the second time but not before taking a huge amount of air into her lung. The air felt cold but it was soothing.
"I can't.."
"I can."
She interrupts the voice that echoes within her. Hugging herself tightly, while feeling the cool night breeze caressing the back of her neck gently.
"I can't breathe... Please"
"It's alright. You're still alive. It'll get better"
She covers her ears this time, trying to drown out the voice that is asking for comfort.
"I can't breathe... Please... I'm you and you're me... Listen to me..."
"Yes, I know. It'll be okay I promise. It'll pass."
She found herself trying to muffle her cries while rocking her body gently forwards and back like a hanging cradle. Choking, wheezing and fighting to stop.
"We can't breathe"
"We are breathing now. Hush now me, this will pass. We promise to be strong and so shall we be."
She slides back down under the covers and snuggled into her bolster. Still gasping slightly for air to fill her lungs from her outburst in the dead of the night.
"..."
Moments pass and silence fell. Her eyelids grew heavier and heavier. She drew one last conscious breath and drifted off to peace.
