Prompt 25 - Taunt
@wolfstarmicrofic November 25, word count 869
Previous part First part
Peter didn’t have a clue that Sirius had penetrated his mind. He had to be careful, though, if he dove in too deep too quickly and the memories came too close to the front of Peter’s mind, he might be tipped off that someone was inside his mind. He might not have much patience with everyday things, but this, he had all the patience in the world.
It didn’t take long for memories to reveal themselves. Talk had turned to the Order, and the spy Dumbledore was sure walked among them. Thought after thought whooshed past him until he stood in a tornado of evidence.
Sirius moved towards a few, brushing his fingertips against them so they played out in their entirety. He felt his heart break as he watched memory after memory show Peter meeting with Voldemort himself and revealing vital secrets to the Dark Lord. There was no doubt in his mind that Peter was the spy; he began to pull out when one last thought from Peter came through. He hesitated and then moved towards it. The memory unfurled before him, and Sirius was horrified.
Lord Voldemort loomed before him.
“I need to know which children were born to the order last July,” he said to Peter. Peter’s heart raced in his chest as he tried to think of the information.
“Erm, well, I, I’m not quite sure. There have been quite a few babies born recently,” he laughed nervously, wringing his hands together.
“You disappoint me, Pettigrew,” Voldemort drawled, turning away from Peter’s cowering form. Sirius saw the wand before Peter did, as the bone white wand slipped from Voldemort's sleeve into his waiting hand. “Crucio!” He screamed, and Peter fell to the floor, writhing in pain as the cruciatus curse spread through his body. Voldemort lifted the curse in less than a minute, but Peter continued to thrash around until Voldemort ordered him to stop.
“I-I – I’ll do better, my Lord. I’ll find the information you seek. I swear it,” Peter panted.
“Good,” Voldemort almost purred, placing one of his claw-like hands on Peter's head, and the memory fizzled out, and Sirius exited Peter’s mind as carefully as he’d entered, though his heart felt a lot heavier. He wanted to cry, but the tears wouldn’t come; he was so devastated by what he’d found in one of his best friends' heads.
Slowly, he got to his feet, making less noise than a whisper and said simply and clearly.
“Prongs.”
James was up in a flash, his wand sliding into his hand as he pointed it at Peter and shouted.
“Expelliarmus!” Peter’s wand shot out of the pocket of his robes and soared the short distance through the air into James’s waiting arms.
“Incarcerus!” Remus cast as he came through the door to the hallway. Thick ropes shot out of the end of his wand and curled themselves around Peter’s body.
“James? Remus? What’s going on?” Peter squeaked, his eyes darting around the room.
“You tell us, Peter,” Sirius said, coming into view in front of Peter’s scared face as he pulled the invisibility cloak off. Peter screamed.
Sirius stared at his restrained friend as he waited for the wailing to stop. Normally, he would have taunted someone who’d be captured so easily, but he couldn’t taunt Peter; he was too sad, too angry, too hurt to spit venom like that.
“S-S-Sirius! He’s here! Do something! He’s a Death Eater! He’s in league with, you know who!” Peter shrieked, struggling against his bonds. Sirius leaned in and said in a clear voice that everyone in the room could hear.
“So are you.”
Peter stopped squirming immediately. His eyes bugged out of his head in horror and then shrank. Sirius furrowed his brow. Why were his eyes… “No!” He yelled as Peter transformed into Wormtail and took off under the sofa, heading for the open window.
Spells bounced around the room, missing the rat by inches. He was going to escape. Wormtail took a running jump, sailing for the window and freedom, when a metal cage floated into his path, and he collided with it, falling inside, and the door closed behind him. He ran around in circles, attempting to escape. He stilled, a look of utter concentration on his face, too human to belong on a rat.
“I wouldn’t if I were you,” Lily spoke from the same doorway Remus had come in moments before. “That cage has an unbreakable charm on it. If you transform, you’ll be squashed to death before you can finish changing. The rat squeaked angrily at her and began attempting to escape the cage again. They’d done it. They’d found the spy. Sirius collapsed onto the sofa, and Remus crossed the room to his side.
“Well done,” he said, leaning over and kissing the top of Sirius’s head. A lazy smile spread across Sirius’s face. Legilimency really did take it out of you.
“Couldn’t have done it without all of you.” He reluctantly got to his feet sooner than he wanted to. Regulus' potion would only keep him going for so long, and he still had work to do, namely, to deliver a traitorous rat to an equally traitorous rat.
