#48 - Tayla Parx - Runaway (ft. Khalid)
Tayla Parx is another best kept secret in the music industry. Much like Priscilla Renea, the real question isn’t who she has written for, but honestly...who hasn’t she written for? Everything from Panic At the Disco, Florida Georgia Line, to playing a major role in the Ariana Grande’s “thank u next” album....seriously, you should look at her credit list. She’s killing it in her 20s!
I had a hard time picking what song from her I wanted to feature on my list. I went back and forth because there’s so many good ones that hit hard. She dropped a solid album this year entitled “We Need To Talk”, which focuses on a relationship that crashes and burns before it could ever really get off of the ground. The songs are short, sweet, and honest. But “Runaway” isn’t on it. I can see why she left this Khalid assisted slow jam off of the record--it doesn’t fit the concept. But it does serve as my first introduction to her as an artist, and I figured if I was going to hand one song to lead people into her catalog, this is the one.
“Runaway” isn’t merely a duet about being so in love with your partner that you want to drop everything and run away with them. It’s about the desire to get away from the pressure of family and friends who may not approve of the relationship. There are issues and obstacles there that are exacerbated by the fact that everyone has something to say. Runaway paints a picture of two lovers who don’t have it quite figured out, but are willing and ready to take the risk even if it means walking away from everything they’ve known before. Khalid opens the song (which is smart, because he’s the bigger artist), and after about a minute and a half, Tayla shows up and makes the song her own. Their voices blend together perfectly. The contrast of his low croon with her bright melodies on top of it take me back to the warm summer days of this year when all I wanted to do was run away with someone I was beginning to fall in love with.
