Choosing the right regulations for safety assessment

It is based on a compliance assessment with the technical requirements found in the IEC 60079 series of standards (electrical products); the IEC 80079 series of standards for non-electrical products; and the application of quality systems which have been developed by Technical Committee (TC) 31.

When I first wrote about the disruption caused to international standards meetings and IECEx meetings, I thought we would be getting back to normal about now.

How wrong I was. Even when I was writing two months ago, we were looking forward to the IEC TC31 meetings to be held across October and November at the UL facility just outside Chicago.

Coronavirus, IECEx and Standards

… I n terms of international meetings, the first reaction came from IECEx in late January. We had been scheduled to hold a week of meetings in Shanghai during May. In conjunction with our Chinese hosts, the decision was taken to move the meetings to Dubai. This seemed a safe arrangement to make at that time, but things have moved on. The possibility of meeting in Dubai no longer exists and there is little possibility of finding a further acceptable location.

Some thoughts on standard writing at the international level

This year, our standards committee, IEC TC31 was not invited to meet along with the IEC General Meeting in Shanghai. Because we are one of the larger committees, always trying to find room for a number of parallel meetings for a fortnight, some hosts just find it too difficult.
