Whenever I say something about how godawful and OOC the dialogue is in NdAA theres always someone whining “Let them have fun and be cringe! They’re teenagers!” Like yeah… they ARE teenagers… so why the FUCK are they speaking like that? NOBODY speaks like that! Let alone teenagers?!? The therapy talk?! The forced and out of place overly emotional lore drops?! The terrible pop culture references which, realistically, not a single character would understand?! The dialogue feels like it was written by Chat GPT and that’s being gracious. Every second line I thought ‘He would never say that wtf.’
Percy should be allowed to kill himself in front of everyone if he discorvered the minotaur thing, as a little treat
If I was Percy I would genuinely just kill myself or move to another continent.
Like, this guy cant have peace, he cant even go to college without some godly bullshit screwing him over.
And when he gets there he will discover that the monster– mythic that killed his mother, nearly killed him and his best friend, traumatized him so badly he still has nightmares about it four years later, lives there too and everyone is fine with it and he is the wrong one for not liking it
I bet that on the third book of Nico Di Angelo disastrous adventures Percy will appear, kill the Minotaur on spot and get put on court for a hate crime and Nico and his one dimensional, sunshine and rainbows boyfriend will have to defend him.
Annabeth and Hazel will scold him the whole book and in the end Percy will learn that not all monsters are bad🥰

Yeah that was the final nail to the coffin. I'm actually done with Riordan's writing. I avoid anything that is Percy jackson merch related
the thing is, it's easy to have a plot where the mythical monsters decide to settle down and stop killing people. it's just that for some reason author's are dead-set on writing redemption arcs that just don't work. if you're going to write a redemption arc, you better write it well. if you fail you're destroying both the villains and heroes' prior characterization.
the minotaur's story is undeniably tragic. he had no hand in his circumstance of birth, or his subsequent imprisonment. he wasn't given a choice to be anything other than a monster. if everybody around you expects you to be a monster, you're treated like a monster, and you have never known otherwise, you would act accordingly. however, that doesn't mean he's innocent or that he should be immediately absolved of his crimes. it means that he's complex.
and back to my first sentence - it would've been easy to shift the plotline from "the demigods learn to forgive and incorporate monsters into their only safe hideouts" to "the demigods and monsters sign a treaty to leave eachother tf alone". themes of breaking the cycle and moving forwards are still there, without ignoring all the trauma the main characters have gone through because of monsters that hunt them down for little reason.
you can even have a character arc for the minotaur without forcefully making percy accommodate him. the minotaur can relearn how to be idk not soft but gentler, reconnect with his more human side, stop killing demigods etc., without undermining percy's trauma. not all characters have to get along for a story to be narratively satisfying.
ive seen people talking about how poorly reyna was handled in toa and how rick didnt take the criticsm very well as well as the ndaa books pretending like she doesnt exist. but i dont think ive seen anybody correlate the two… like, the math is pretty simple. rick is pretending she doesnt exist because that way he can pretend all the problems and criticisms surrounding her dont exist either
