Ray Collins
Collins is an Australian photographer, he first picked up a camera in 2007 and used it to photograph his friends surfing around his home after long shifts working in a nearby coal mine. His attention quickly shifted from his friends to patterns and forms he noticed in the waves. Collins, who is colorblind, was also drawn to the interplay of light and water, perhaps more attune to contrast than the nuance of color. He poetically refers to this switch from coal miner to fine art photographer as a balance between his “black life and blue life.”
I chose to look deeper into his work, as he captures the subtle nuances of organic movement through his camera lens, which relates to my practice -focussing on organic movement. Growing up on the beach and living every moment possible in the sea I really wanted to bring that side of me out in my photography series. My family and I have a strong bond with the ocean, every year we all come together at the same beach to celebrate life, death and family. Bazley Beach in KZN, is the particular beach I would like to focus on, everyone in my family who has passed is scattered there, it is both my physical and spiritual sanctuary. Like many others, I find a lot of inner solitude and happiness when I go to the beach. The waves are my therapy, watching it make new patterns in the sand and form different shades of blue at various times of the day makes me fascinated by its ability to transcend organic movement.
For my final photography series I would like to use film to capture the ocean. The not knowing and mystique around film really excites me and it is something I would like to play with more in my practice. I like to think and see things as a process and whatever happens along the way (planned or unplanned) it becomes apart of that process. The idea of using film and the level of risk one takes when using film instead of a digital camera excites me. It is a process of trial and era and seeing what works best for you as well as your camera. The unexpected when it comes to film is my favourite part, often you don't get your film developed straight away so when you do, there is a magical feeling that one gets when looking back at the photos taken. Some photos just didn't take or it was out of focus, too much light got in or its a blur - all these unexpected aspects of film are what I’d like to capture through my series as well as link it to the organic movement of the sea.

Final portrait series.
Concept: These photographs are a play between a feminine and masculine identity. I wanted the pictures to be evenly lit, quite flat yet still painted with detail. The shots are close up and confronting; emphasizing on the confrontational aspect of dealing with ones self and their respective representation.
